Will a dark history doom their future together? New York copper Tom Halloran is a man with a past. If anyone finds out he once ran with the notorious O'Connell tunnel gang, he'll spend the rest of his life doing hard time behind bars. But Tom's secret is threatened when a horrible murder on his beat seems to have been caused by the same ancient magic that killed his gang. Cat shifter Cicero is determined to investigate the disappearance of one friend and the death of another, even though no one else believes the cases are connected. When the trail of his investigation crosses Tom's, the very bohemian Cicero instinctively recognizes the uncultured Irish patrolman as his witch. Though they're completely unsuited to one another, Cicero has no choice but to work alongside Tom...all the while fighting against the passion growing within. Tom knows that taking Cicero as his familiar would only lead to discovery and disaster. Yet as the heat between them builds, Tom's need for the other man threatens to overcome every rational argument against becoming involved. But when their investigation uncovers a conspiracy that threatens all of New York, Tom must make the hardest decision of his life: to live a lie and gain his heart's desire, or to confess the truth and sacrifice it all.

For #LetterH #alphabetgame I recommend the Hexworld series by Jordan Hawk. It takes place in a gritty alternate New York of the early Industrial Age. With magic, were-animals, and a m/m romance. Highly recommend.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you for playing! 2y

Nutmegnc @bookandbedandtea I thought I‘d hate them so I put off reading them for years but jokes on me cause I LOVED them. Wish there were more in this world. 2y

Absolutely loved the world building in this book, it was different to a lot of urban fantasy mythos and I really enjoyed it

The main characters were interesting but dumb as bricks in an endearing way so I didn't mind too much

2/5⭐ It started off okay, with interesting, often amusing characters and the potential for a compelling mystery. But the worldbuilding was severely lacking, and in the last few chapters every single point of conflict, both internal and external, was "resolved" in a cop-out way so that the characters didn't actually have to struggle to overcome them.

This book isn't in the database so I tagged the first in the series. This book just came out and I can't wait to return to this world: magic, shape shifting familiars, turn of the previous century New York, m/m romance, conspiracies, and government corruption... what's not to love?

The ebook for this one is on sale for 99 cents. Perfect timing because there‘s another book out tomorrow. Much like Whyborne & Griffith (I posted about Balefire last night) this series is m|m with magic. It takes place primarily in England and the magical system uses familiars (who are shifters). This sets up possibilities for discrimination, etc. so it has more opportunities to address social issues. Overall, another good series.

I've read almost all of Jordan Hawk's books and I'm thrilled to find out that Hexslayer is out next month (third book in this series). Shifters that enable magic (familiars) is the universe for this one. I should probably do a better job of watching series I'm reading.

(4 stars) Three Thoughts 1) A few friends recommended this series to me but I was totally unprepared for how much I'd love it! 2) what a unique world! Loved the combination of magic and historical and witches and familiars and just everything! 3) great chemistry between the leads and I was so sad for this story to end!

Sue Great review! I've just grabbed it on kindle :) 7y
Irisheyz77 @Sue it's such a fun series 7y
