Like @TorieStorieS I picked this book for my #DominicanRepublic book for #ReadAroundTheWorld.

Really beautifully written historical fiction about the 1937 Parsley Massacre, in which thousands of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic were brutally murdered on orders of dictator Rafael Trujillo. I knew very little about this event before listening to this—I do love a book that gets me researching.

Narration for the audio is great!

For the #ReadAroundTheWorld challenge, the country this month is the #DominicanRepublic - & I brushed the dust off this one that has been languishing on my shelves for over a decade. I don‘t know why I waited so long to read this brief but powerful view into a part of history (1937 Dominican Republic & Haitian history). Heart-breaking and profound and beautifully written, I think this is my very favorite of all of Danticat‘s books that I‘ve read!

These two, along with In The Time of The Butterflies by Julia Alvarez (which I have already read) will accompany me on our Christmas trip to the Dominican Republic. I usually try to read something set in the place I'm going, though with the DR it was rather slim pickings. That is, I think the available choices are great, just that there aren't very many period. 🌴🌞🍹

This book is one of my all-time favorites. The crèche and painting are from Haiti.

The farming of bones is the first book I've read by Edwidge Danticat and won't be my last. There is a beautiful love story at the heart of this tragic event in Haitian history. Read it you won't regret it!
