I read this for work. It‘s the One Maryland One Book selection for 2024. It‘s a fictional account of the aftermath of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. Told through multiple character‘s POV‘s it really works to create a whole picture of the aftermath & how it affects ordinary people. It‘s beautifully written! So many long paragraphs proved a challenge for my adhd brain but it‘s such a powerful read. You need to read this one!

Weekly #libraryhaul seems to happen every Friday. This one features 4 titles in danger of being weeded. So I adopted them.

3/5
Dany Laferrière chronicles his first year in Quebec through short free verses. He evokes a lot of topics (weather, immigration, solitude, men/women relationships, integration, etc.), vignettes after vignettes, with the five senses very present throughout.
Overall, an interesting read.

Fountain‘s writing is exquisite. His main character perfectly embodies the cringe worthy cis white male American, while getting to the meat of actual political issues and problems without reading like a history book or feeling like a sermon. #ToB24

Megabooks I think I‘m going to have to get to this! 5mo
squirrelbrain Gah! I can only get this from Amazon and it‘s expensive. It sounds like you think it‘s worth it? 5mo
Well-ReadNeck So, full disclosure, I did this one on audiobook and really enjoyed the narration @squirrelbrain 5mo

Read for #Haiti for #ReadingtheAmericas2023 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBb

Another excellent novel by Isabel Allende covering life on Haiti, the slave trade, voodoo, the slave uprising and is an excellent read. I think I enjoyed this part more than when the book shifted to Louisiana at the time when it was transferred over to the American authorities. A sad ending for the book.

I think I‘ve found a new favourite author.

Could be a good movie someday.

I‘ve always wanted to go to Haiti. Hearing Wyclef Jean as a teen made a big impression for some reason.
