Denying the Holocaust
Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory | Deborah Lipstadt
4 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
The powerful and deeply disturbing book that was at the heart of the David Irving libel case, now dramatized in the film Denial. The denial of the Holocaust has no more credibility than the assertion that the Earth is flat. Yet there are those who insist that the death of six million Jews in Nazi concentration camps is nothing but a hoax perpetrated by a powerful Zionist conspiracy. For years those who made such claims were dismissed as harmless cranks operating on the lunatic fringe. But they have now begun to gain a hearing in respectable arenas. In this famous book, reissued now to coincide with the film based on the legal case it provoked, Denial, Deborah Lipstadt shows how--despite tens of thousands of witnesses and vast amounts of documentary evidence--this irrational idea not only has continued to gain adherents but has become an international movement, with 'independent' research centres, and official publications that promote a 'revisionist' view of recent history. Denying the Holocaust argues that this chilling attack on the factual record not only threatens Jews but has an unsuspected power to dramatically alter the way that truth and meaning are transmitted from one generation to another.

It‘s depressing that we need this book! We don‘t debate if the French Revolution happened or slavery so why is the Holocaust up for debate? With contrary, misinformed people out there believing the world is flat, denying climate change, anti-vaxers and that Elvis is still alive; this book is more essential than ever. Lipstadt puts her case across with intelligence, wit and great humanity! A 5 star read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TrishB Sounds good. Stacked 👍🏻 5y
Cinfhen Lunacy 😡 5y
KathyWheeler There‘s a movie, Denial, out there about the lawsuit she was involved in with a Holocaust denier. I liked it. 5y

Caroline2 @TrishB it‘s good but I had to keep taking breaks as it made me so mad. 😡 5y
Caroline2 @KathyWheeler Yes! I loved the film too. 👍 5y
GingerAntics @KathyWheeler someone sued her because they don‘t think the Holocaust happened? Seriously? It those folks that say there are too many ridiculous law suits these days. WTF?! Please tell me this lunatic didn‘t win? 5y
KathyWheeler @GingerAntics She called David Irving, who was a history professor who wrote about WWII, a Holocaust denier; he sued her for libel. She won. 5y
GingerAntics Is he a Holocaust denier? 5y
Caroline2 @GingerAntics yes!! He most definitely is. He has been rightfully disgraced since the court case as he calls himself a historian yet uses no evidence to back up his opinions. He‘s also a huge fan of Hitler and claimed he “got a lot right.” 🙄 🤦‍♀️ 5y
GingerAntics Wow. Just wow. How are you going to write about WWII and claim the Holocaust didn‘t happen? That‘s messed up. 5y
Caroline2 @GingerAntics but there is justice...he got a 3yr prison sentence in Vienna for denying the Holocaust! 👏🙌🏻🎉🥳 https://www.theguardian.com/guardianweekly/story/0,,1715580,00.html (edited) 5y
GingerAntics Oh that is AWESOME!!! I love countries with really logical humanitarian laws like that. It‘s beautiful. I hope he‘s still in there. Jerk. I‘m sorry, he wanted leniency because of his age and because he has a young daughter and a sick wife? How about he just sucks it up and be thankful he‘ll walk out of there in three years alive and well. 5y
GingerAntics He should have to serve his time as a docent at a holocaust museum where he will be forced to follow a historically accurate script, while being closely monitored by a REAL historian. He‘s not even a real historian. What‘s up with that. 5y
Caroline2 @GingerAntics that‘s a great idea!! I know, it‘s shocking his lack of education and yet calls himself a historian. Thank god for countries like Austria. Holocaust denial really needs to be taken more seriously and it needs to stop being referred to as the “other side of the debate”. Next we‘ll be debating if the world is flat!! 😉 5y
GingerAntics Yeah, historical fact is not a debate. Sorry. I love that I only have a masters in history, so I‘m constantly in a debate over if I‘m a historian yet or not, but this ding bat declares himself a historian and no one argues with him. What‘s up with that?! 5y
Caroline2 @GingerAntics Wow!! That‘s so impressive! But I know what you mean, I only have a degree in History and no way I‘d presume to call myself a historian. 🙄 I prefer to call myself a history lover (not a fighter!!) 😆 5y
GingerAntics I‘m the same way. It‘s unclear when you actually get the title...but then this jerk just decides he‘s a historian because he wants to rewrite it?! What‘s up with that?! 5y
Caroline2 @GingerAntics Yep!! What a twat!! 😆 5y
GingerAntics Perfect description. Total twat! 5y

Adding this #Nonfiction #historical defense of the fight for truth in what's arguably the greatest mass murder in world history to my #TBR stack. I found it while remembering the men and women who suffered at Dachau Concentration Camp.
