Pursuit of William Abbey
Pursuit of William Abbey | Claire North
13 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 11 to read
A hauntingly powerful novel about how the choices we make can stay with us forever, by the award-winning author of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August and 84K.South Africa in the 1880s. A young and naive English doctor by the name of William Abbey witnesses the lynching of a local boy by the white colonists. As the child dies, his mother curses William. William begins to understand what the curse means when the shadow of the dead boy starts following him across the world. It never stops, never rests. It can cross oceans and mountains. And if it catches him, the person he loves most in the world will die.Gripping, moving, and utterly thought-provoking, this novel proves once again that Claire North is one of the most innovative voices in modern fiction.Previous books by Claire North: The First Fifteen Lives of Harry AugustTouchThe Sudden Appearance of HopeThe End of the Day84KThe GameshousePrevious books written as Kate Griffin: Matthew Swift novels: A Madness of AngelsThe Midnight MayorThe Neon CourtThe Minority CouncilMagicals Anonymous novels: Stray SoulsThe Glass God

Mehso-so

This is a jump into historical science fiction with the grand sweep of empires ending hanging as a backdrop to a chase that might have been better 100 pages shorter. Still engaging with some of the Claire North stylings that will have me seek her out again and again- kinda like her shadow.

Meh. This failed to grip me... There were moments when I started to get into it, and then it would fall flat again.

Another one down in #bookspinbingo though! @TheAromaofBooks

And the bookmark felt appropriate!

'They say I‘m cursed.'

'Do you believe them?'

'Yes. I do.'

To my surprise, he smiled, and patted me on the back. 'You are absolutely correct, Dr Abbey. It is marvellous.'

He sprang back to his feet as if propelled by a catapult, slung his jacket over one arm and his shoes round his neck, and gave his fiercest battle cry: 'Now we drink iced beverages and celebrate.'

A failed doctor is chased across the world by a terrible curse. Set just before the first world war, you know, the war to end all wars. Global politics, Spies, and the supernatural, it's actually quite believable. Good stuff.

To live in a state of truth to truly know the world as it is, rather than as you wish to perceive it, is frightening. Terrifying.

When you spend a week spreadsheeting for your 2020 reading plan, then go to the library and grab books that aren't on the plan. Also think I'm going to need more nougat than originally planned as well.

An intriguing story with an interesting premise. Combining historical fiction, suspense and a paranormal magical realism, I had a tough time putting this book down. While this book is quite depressing at times, showcasing the brutality of humanity and the many injustices in life, it really makes you think and feel. In stores tomorrow, 11/12/2019.

Thanks to #Goodreads and #OrbitBooks for a free eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh, this sounds like it‘s right up my alley!! I‘ve read TFLOHA and TSAOH, but I couldn‘t get into Touch. I will have to try this one!! 5y
SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime @JanuarieTimewalker13 I've got TFLOHA on my tbr & my bookshelf in my room, hoping to get to it soon, I've heard great things 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh, I loved that book...so much!! I neglected to put it on my top books of the decade, but it def deserves a place there! 5y

My current view. 😻 Reading this one in preparation for my blog tour stop this Saturday! So far it's turning out to be an interesting mix of historical fiction and magical realism. 👍
