"Crombie's characters are rich, emotionally textured, fully human. They are the remarkable creations of a remarkable writer."--Louise PennyNew York Times bestselling author Deborah Crombie returns with a mesmerizing entry in her "excellent" (Miami Herald) series, in which Scotland Yard detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James are pulled into a dangerous web of secrets, lies, and murder that simmers beneath the surface of a tranquil Cotswolds village. Scotland Yard Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his wife, Detective Inspector Gemma James, have been invited for a relaxing weekend in the Cotswolds, one of Britain's most enchanting regions, famous for its rolling hills, golden cottages, and picturesque villages.Duncan, Gemma, and their children are guests at Beck House, the family estate of Melody Talbot, Gemma's detective sergeant. The Talbot family is wealthy, prominent, and powerful--Melody's father is the publisher of one of London's largest and most influential newspapers. The centerpiece of this glorious fall getaway is a posh charity harvest luncheon catered by up-and-coming chef Viv Holland. After fifteen years in London's cut-throat food scene, Viv has returned to the Gloucestershire valleys of her childhood and quickly made a name for herself with her innovative meals based on traditional cuisine but using fresh local ingredients. Attended by the local well-to-do as well as national press food bloggers and restaurant critics, the event could make Viv a star. But a tragic car accident and a series of mysterious deaths rock the estate and pull Duncan and Gemma into the investigation. It soon becomes clear that the killer has a connection with Viv's pub--or, perhaps, with Beck House itself.Does the truth lie in the past? Or is it closer to home, tied up in the tangled relationships and bitter resentments between the staff at Beck House and Viv's new pub? Or is it more personal, entwined with secrets hidden by Viv and those closest to her?

Duncan and Gemma and their children are invited to Melody Talbot‘s parents country home for a long weekend, but of course things start happening before they‘ve all arrived. Duncan is in an accident that turns complicated. Of course it does. Murder, deception, poisoning, chefs, dogs, family drama, and, as always, a mishmash of personal and professional life. I love this series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#24B4Monday another book completed. #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick a mystery- the 18th in the Duncan Kincaid, Gemma James series and I loved this one- perhaps less for the mystery than the pastoral and gastronomic touches- everyone is away at Melody‘s parents‘ house for a weekend in the Cotswalds. This book centers in on the gourmet pub, local growers, flowers and the relationships between beloved characters 4⭐️ #mystery

Cathythoughts Sounds like a great series... I must investigate ♥️👍🏻 5y
Booksnchill @Cathythoughts i love it- it is a wide story arc but I have followed it many years and it doesn‘t get predictible- if you like Elizabeth George, Martha Grimes, PD James, this may be for you. 5y
Crazeedi I have to look for this series for sure! 5y

Love this new addition to this series! It seemed almost faster paced than her London stories even though it takes place in a country village. I read it in a day. Now to wait for the next one!

Susanita My coworker had a “date” at McDonald‘s and he “forgot” his wallet. But since he‘d also made her drive, she said she had to get her wallet from the car, and she left his ass there. 5y

*squeal of joy* BEST #bookmail in ages! Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James are my favorite detectives anyway, and I‘ve been extra-eagerly anticipating this one since following Deborah Crombie‘s Cotswold adventures on IG a few months ago!
The Cotswolds are my favorite part of England — so I had to pull out a few scrapbook pages from my summer in Gloucestershire when I was 18. Crazy it was literally half my lifetime ago, because it seems so vivid still!

Edelweiss ARC of the 18th in Crombie‘s Kincaid and James series. Duncan and Gemma and family have been invited to spend the weekend at the Talbot‘s country residence. Driving separately, Duncan‘s car is hit by another car, in which both driver and passenger are killed. Turns out that the passenger may have been dead before the accident. I highly recommend this series. It was an effortless and enjoyable read with a surprise ending. 4.5/5.0⭐️ #2019
