Toddler passed out early, and I finally got to finish up this fun YA mystery (in the bath with booze😱). While it's fully stand alone, I love Scarlett as a PI & would happily hang out with her more. This case provides insight into her family but there's a lot more to unpack with her and all the supporting characters. I didn't anticipate the mystical magical bits ✨ TW youth suicide and dog heartache 🙈 #mommyreads #ya #crime #woc #muslimamericans

Thanks @Laughterhp - I really enjoyed this book (although I'm not really surprised as it's one of my favourite genres)!

A pile of some of the mystery books I owned for today's Follow the Clues for #backtoreading. I really enjoyed all of these books!!
I liked this book featuring Scarlett, an urban, Muslim, teen detective. I liked her Jewish love interest, too (Deck -- what a hunk!). I thought it was cool that the author used elements from comparative religion to tie in a supernatural storyline. I like that it manages to be both spiritual & feminist.
It's like Veronica Mars + Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but more diverse (& not quite as witty). I'd read more of these, were it to become a series.
"I left the Rubicon alone, even though Deck had offered to go with me. Insisted, even. But I turned him down. Needing him was one thing. Needing him to protect me was another."
The comparisons to Veronica Mars are apt, although the mystery didn't really grab me all that much - there wasn't as much depth to it as I would have liked. That being said, I do hope this is the beginning of a series as I would absolutely read the next one.
Gah, the heartbreak of being unable to fit books into my bag when moving between countries yet again 💔😭✈➡🗾 #mommyreads #packingbooks
