Thomas Jefferson Builds a Library
Thomas Jefferson Builds a Library | Barb Rosenstock
7 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
As soon as Thomas Jefferson learned to read, he found his passion: books, books, and more books! Before, during, and after the American Revolution, Jefferson collected thousands of books on hundreds of subjects. In fact, his massive collection eventually helped rebuild the Library of Congressnow the largest library in the world. Barb Rosenstock s rhythmic words and John O Brien s whimsical illustrations capture Jefferson s passion for the written word as well as little-known details about book collecting. Author and artist worked closely with experts to create the first picture book on Jefferson s love of reading, writing, and books. An author s note, bibliography, and source notes for quotations are also included. "

Mehso-so

On a Rosenstock binge, but this is not a fav. Good for bibiliophiles and history fans. PRO: She found various ways to quantify large numbers (of books) to help readers comprehend TJ's staggering collections. CON: Tiny sidebars of quotes and historical context. Seriously too small; they feel like an afterthought. CON: No mention of enslaved people in main text / illustrations (this is personal to me but also super important to me). #dw2020reads

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm That‘s disappointing...I still have this on my TBR and will probably still check it out, but hearing your con‘s makes me a bit apprehensive. 😞 5y
cozypunk @Bookwyrm42 Your mileage may vary. On one hand, I empathize with the writer's need to stick to the theme and to stay hyper-focused on the narrative. And Rosenstock does address it in the historical afterward. On the other hand, I have less and less patience for whitewashing, even when benign. 5y

My mom sent me an early birthday present (my birthday isn't until January). A bookish Jefferson quote I'm sure we can all relate to. 😁

Thos. Jefferson's 1st library was burned in a house fire. His 2d renewed the ruined national library, which became the Library of Congress (decimated by fire in 1851). His 3rd, collected in retirement "for amusement not use," numbered some 1,600 volumes. "I cannot live without books," he said.
