The most incredibly helpful book in the topic I have found. I have always been told this region is too complex to understand, but Khalidi walks you through the history point by point in an easily digestible way. There is a lot going on, I started on audio & then switched to both versions so I could more easily go back and understand better certain events. I love the tone throughout & that the author has been personally involved in negotiations

A really good history that I wish more people took the time to understand. I had to take it a chapter at a time, because my emotions were so strong after reading. I felt like the last couple of chapters lacked the detail of the first, but still found it a solid, engaging, and informative read.
... Anglo American Committee of inquiry in 1946. This body was established by the British and US governments to consider the urgent and pitiful situation of Jewish Holocaust survivors, a 100,000 of whom were confined to displaced persons camps in Europe. The American and Zionist preference was for these unfortunates to be granted immediate entry to Palestine (neither the US nor the UK being willing to accept them), in effect ... *Sorry, WTAF?!?
What is happening in Palestine is wrong. Collective punishment is wrong. Killing civilians is actually a war crime and yet the Israelis continue to target hospitals, journalists and other civilian areas. Over 6000 of those deaths have been children. CHILDREN! (Reem - "The soul of my soul" will never be forgotten.) The world is watching. Ethnic cleansing is not defense. It is interesting we support Ukraine but not Palestine. Why? #freepalestine
bailedI understand that history books need to be read with a critical distance and you have to keep in mind what the author wants to present...but, Khalidi is a historian and that makes it even harder to overlook how biased this book is. I persisted until halfway through, and I allow for the possibility that the tone of the content may change in the second half.

pickThis is a good primer on the history of Palestine/Israel. The early sections are dry and read like a textbook, but it becomes a faster read when we reach the era of “peace talks” in which the author was directly involved. While I had surface knowledge of many of the events, I appreciate the insights Khalidi provides. I can see why it‘s on all of the recommended reading lists. It deserves to be.
My picks for #Asianreadathon. I've already started The Hundred Years' War on Palestine. Its heartbreaking and eye opening. I've wanted to understand more about the conflict between Israel and Palestine and this book clearly lays it out.
pickabsolute must read for anyone trying to understand the fundamentals about palestine/israel. khalidi moved me to tears several times, often because of the masterful way he weaves sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes bittersweet family and personal stories into palestinian history. he‘s a fantastic writer and clearly brilliant intellectual. ⭐️ 5/5 ⭐️
