While I‘m definitely not the best reader for this book (there‘s SO much detailed description of soccer games), the stories of the refugees are compelling. Luma, the coach, is a great central character for the book, and I wish that several of the players who appear throughout the book had been similarly developed. I‘m excited to take this to my classroom to see what my students think!

Clarkston GA was designated a refugee settlement center in the 1990s. Luma, born in Jordan but educated in America, founded a youth soccer team to unify refugee children and keep them off troubled streets.

You don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy this book.. It's the true life story of the 'Fugees', a soccer team formed by refugee kids in Clarkston, Georgia! As the blurb says, it is a story of hope, conflict and transformation on the playing fields of an American town #augustphotochallenge #booksandsports @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

My 8th grader picked this YA book from the school summer reading list. And he loved it, and can't stop talking about it! Now I have been assigned the adult version of the book. Highly recommend this for middle/high school soccer players and fans.
