'Superb' LEE CHILD "You died once... Tell me who arranged your resurrection, or before the day's out, you'll be dead and gone forever." 1930. A chilling encounter on London's Necropolis Railway leads to murder. At the Old Bailey, a man accused of a 'blazing car' killing escapes the gallowsafter a surprise witness gives sensational evidence. And journalist Jacob Flint finds himself framed for murder. To save himself, Jacob needs to discover what links these strange events to a remote estate on a northern coast, Mortmain Hall. At Mortmain Hall, an eccentric female criminologist hosts a gathering of people who have narrowly escaped the consequences of miscarriages of justice. But the house party culminates in tragedy when a body is found beneath the crumbling cliffs. Is the death an accident or the result of an ingenious plot to get away with murder? An eclectic mix of suspects and victims includes a radical publisher risen from the grave, a fake medium with a sinister past, and a cricketer mauled to death by an escaped lion. Jacob sets out to uncover the labyrinthine secrets of Mortmain Hall, alongside a woman whose relentless quest for the truth might just bring down the British establishment... Who can we turn to, if justice betrays us? 'Gripping' Peter Robinson. 'Superb- a pitch-perfect blend of Golden Age charmand sinister modern suspense, with a main character to die for. This is the book Edwards was born to write' LEE CHILD.

The first book in this 1930s gothic mystery series was just a so-so for me, but this second installment was really good!

I warmed all the way up to main characters Rachel Savernake, amateur detective, and Jacob Flint, intrepid crime reporter, and this mystery with its maze of interconnecting murders was so fun. Secret clubs, debauchery, lions and tigers, frame jobs… climaxing with a Clue-esque stormy night at a crumbling mansion. 🖤

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

sprainedbrain Edwards really hit his stride with this one and I look forward to reading the new (3rd) book when I can get my hands on it. 2y

This is historical crime fiction set in England in 1930. It is the second in a series about a young women called Rachel Savernake, who is an amateur detective. She tries to solve a series of possible murders, that at first are deemed not murder. She is joined by journalist Jacob Flint. She goes to an estate, Mortmain Hall with she tries to solve the case like in an Agatha Christie style. I enjoyed it, I did not figure out the murderer. #crimebooks

Ah classic-style Christie-like mystery. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Come to dinner, we‘ll solve a murder.

Shortest Summary Ever: Rachel Savernake is into crime as a hobby (eh I don‘t judge), so she invites some folks over who were acquitted for their crimes. Are they innocent? There‘s a body and The Who-done-it revs up. Full review at ScrappyMags.com

I really enjoyed this mystery set in 1930 London. It‘s second in series so I really want to go back and read the first one to catch up on some backstory. The heroine is a bit of an enigma (lots of room for interesting discoveries), a rich, very clever independent young woman who was recently “liberated” from a remote island when her ailing father (an eccentric judge) passed away. She is rather obsessed with murder solving. ⬇️

robinb She has a loyal set of servants/friends who help her along her crime-solving journey, and an intrepid reporter and Scotland Yard man to round out the cast.
This was interesting and absorbing with solid writing and a clever, intriguing plot. 4.5/5⭐️

I took me a while to get into this modern version of a golden age mystery but one I did I was hooked. It's a twisty tale that hovers somewhere between cozy and gothic. I believe it's the second of a proposed series. #Doublespin

Set in the 1930‘s, this is a classic style murder mystery. It tells of Rachel Savernake, a wealthy, semi reclusive woman who lives in a large home with a staff of the Truelove family, who she is close to. Rachel is also an amateur sleuth.

Staying at Mortmain Hall with a group of people, a murder is committed and Rachel begins to investigate and find a killer. What links these guests?

Cindyelizavaz Such a beautiful cover. 5y

An amateur criminologist brings together several people who literally got away with murder. What could possibly go wrong?

This second book in the series set in the 1930s was much better than the first. I really enjoyed it. 4🌟

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Head of Zeus, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was on the cusp as a pick or so-so. It‘s an homage to Golden Age Crime that I felt tried a little too hard and got bogged down with descriptions. I love Martin Edwards work as a historian and editor. This book was only ok. For full review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3179168426 Publication Date: 02 April 2020
