Teddy Wayne and especially the tagged book was one of the most welcome surprises this year (thanks to @Megabooks). Not only is this the best cover of the year 😍 it‘s also a very touching book. One of those examples in which an author is able to say so much with sparse words.
pickI almost didn‘t read this because it was the last of my “didn‘t want to buy 10 books so put 10 books on hold at the library” picks. They inevitably all become available within a few weeks of each other and I end up feeling overwhelmed. I‘m glad I didn‘t let this expire unread. The time period was wonderfully nostalgic as I was in the beginning stages of my university career in ‘96, albeit not as a lit major. The “friendship bordering on obsession”
pickUnique plot where the narrator is never named. Yet I really didn‘t notice because the author captured the narrator‘s loneliness and alienation in such a universal way. This short novel packs a punch about how a solitary life can lead to selfish yet somewhat understandable choices. 4/5 ⭐️

pickIt‘s 1996 in NYC and the narrator of this book has been subletting illegally in his aunt‘s big apartment. He asks a charismatic friend without a place to live, to join him there. Both are students at writing program at Columbia. What follows is a portrait of a volatile friendship but most of all a portrait of loneliness and insecurity.

pickTeddy Wayne is my favorite author that you‘ve probably never heard of. He writes these excellent socially awkward, intelligent, loner protagonists.
It‘s 1996 and the MC is in an MFA program at Columbia. He strikes up a friendship with another student, and desperate for friends, he allows the student to move into his rent controlled apartment illegally. There are overtones of homoeroticism and envy. Teddy is a master of the slow build. 4.5⭐️⬇️
