"For fans of Donna Tartt's The Secret History, a propulsive literary novel about sexual obsession in which a meek Harvard freshman becomes dangerously infatuated with a classmate. David Federman has never felt appreciated. One of the most painfully forgettable members of his New Jersey high school class--yet the only one accepted to Harvard--shy, witty David arrives in Cambridge fully expecting to embrace, and be welcomed by, a new tribe of like-minded peers. But at first, beyond the friendly advances of a plain-looking girl named Sara, his social status seems devastatingly unlikely to change. Then he meets Veronica Morgan Wells. Instantly infatuated, struck by both her beauty and her brains, David falls feverishly in love with the woman he sees as a charismatic goddess. Determined to stop at nothing to win her attention and a coveted invite into her glamorous Upper East Side world, David begins compromising his own moral standards, tossing everything aside for this one, great chance at happiness. But neither Veronica nor David, it turns out, are exactly as they seem... A darkly comic and riveting portrayal of psychosexual obsession from one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation, Loner also turns the traditional campus novel on its head as it explores contemporary gender politics and class--and discovers just what we're capable of when our greatest enemies turn out to be ourselves"--

A disturbing (and sad) read about a freshman‘s year at Harvard. David is academic smart, pathetic, a loner, and is obsessed with a fellow student. His obsession and stalking take a dark turn. The novel is gripping; thought-provoking in exploring obsession, privilege; David‘s interior monologue is at times witty and mostly struck as unhinged; the vocabulary used is good, clever. I‘ll like to read more of Teddy Wayne‘s works.

Thanks to @britt_brooke for tipping me off that this was “dark academia”, my 2nd to last category for #Booked2022 to complete.

David gets into Harvard but his plan to become “someone” isn‘t as easy as he thought. He‘s possibly a sociopath? The book is creepily narrated from his perspective as he mimics behaviors in an effort to attract a cool, rich girl, ignoring real friendship from others he deems deficient. It‘s all terrifyingly plausible.

squirrelbrain Great review - I loved this one! 1y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Both misogyny and female empowerment are the center of this twisted redemption story set in dark academia. David, a lifelong outcast, attempts to reinvent himself at Harvard with increasingly cringy, abhorrent behavior as his obsession with Veronica devours his life. Is he a narcissist? Maybe. A sociopath? Likely. A stalker? 100%. Wayne‘s use of the second person narrative as David addresses his desire is creepily effective. #bookclub

SOOOO GOOD!! Fabulous narration🎧David Federman enters Harvard with dreams of reinvention - a loner in HS, David hopes his college years will see him flourish and grow but when he falls for a girl so out of his reach, he concocts a scheme both dangerous & detrimental. I know you didn‘t like this one @Cathythoughts but thank you very much for sending it to me as I loved it!

The MC, David, is initially only mildly unlikeable but then the book turns a *whole* lot darker. I love campus novels and this one is based at Harvard. I‘d never heard of final clubs before so had to look them up. Reading about that obnoxious culture really helped with the book - and as for the ending...! 😧

I really wanted to like this one, and started off well enough, but very quickly this changed & I just couldn‘t be in the company of the MC , or take the tone of the writing. I made a few attempts, did some skimming ... I didn‘t like him at all , and soon became completely allergic. So , I decided it was time to quit ....
But I‘m really glad I gave it a go because I love thrillers & college settings ... this one wasn‘t for me though.

TrishB MC doesn‘t sound like a nice person! 4y

#audiobook review

Narrator Bendena brings prototypical awkwardly obsessive incel* David Federman to life. His voice shows the grating combination of white privilege, toxic masculinity and complete impotence. His narration elevates this book 1/2⭐️.

David is obsessed with fellow Harvard freshman Veronica and goes to extreme lengths to gain her attention - dating her roommate, breaking the honor code - only to get caught in a great ending twist. ⬇️

Megabooks *incel = an involuntarily celibate man; I picked this up last night when Henry peed in my bed again. Once again, I was taking everything apart at 1 AM. I‘ve made him an appointment with the vet for Wednesday, but I don‘t think it will really improve until dad comes home. Speaking of dad, I‘m going ask him if I can share a pic of him standing in the hospital. He can walk 200 feet now!! 🥳🥳 (About 65 meters, metrics!) 4y

When @Megabooks wrote Wayne is one of her favorite authors you‘ve never heard of,I was intrigued.
My library had this one , so ..Impressive, you get a bit of a character like Joe in You, a bit of The Secret History.Wayne writes lines that are funny, deep and cringe worthy all at the same time.David felt unappreciated in high school but wants to change it all when he enters Harvard.Ambition ,class, & gender politics come into play +dark obsession.

This was the first “loner” that came to mind (hence me posting it). However I should note David, the titular character, while certainly a memorable loner, is one that‘d set off alarm bells if claimed as a “favorite.” Loner mines some dark&disquieting corners of a particular brand of toxic masculinity. The meeker type that goes “I‘m a good guy, really!” But as the book goes deeper the reader knows better... #oneistheloneliest# @Elle_Skeldon

BookishFeminist @MsBlueSox yes! At least I'm not hate reading though, the main character just makes me want to blow a fuse at his life choices and opinions 😂 7y
Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist it was print!!!!!! But his voice reminded me of so many egotistical and maniacs in college. 7y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Lol yep, I have dated an asshole like this. #neveragain But that's why I'm loving it, mostly bc I think I need something to scream at that isnt politics for a bit. 😂 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ok, sadly this made me want to read this and see where it goes. Annoying character for sure...but a pretty open discussion about things with a character whose opinions we all know exists in real life. 7y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa go read it! It's satire. Just finished it, loved it. This post definitely not meant to deter anyone from reading it. Just wanted to vent about the vein I'm about to burst every time he opens his mouth 😂 7y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa fwiw I've literally had this exact same argument with several white men this past week so...yea. makes me want to scream and throw things. It's nice it was in a book this time lol 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist and nice that a book is finally capturing that sentiment by white men accurately. I don't know that I've seen that written in print so well before, let alone with a character that then pokes holes in the argument in a fun teasing not debate until death way. 7y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I could have screenshot half of this book with all his holier than thou misogynistic comments 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist We've all heard them, in life and definitely I'm comment sections... but I can't say I've seen that represented in fiction. Which is, this is going to sound really odd, a shame...because years later it would be nice if it was recorded somewhere the passive aggressive little tidbits that had people protesting, etc. The everyday sexism/racism on the daily, by your average Joe, that lead to xyz. Is it weird that I feel like that... 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...logic needs to be preserved somewhere, so in the future people may see what caused some of the controversy. I'm know I'm not explaining this well at all, but I'm glad in a way, to see this dynamic recorded as part of a storyline. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Maybe it's that I feel vindicated seeing it in print and reaffirming that it isn't all in my head and my perceptions.😳 7y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I don't think that's weird at all—I feel the same way, especially since it's brought up in satire fiction that's also written by a male author. There's something particularly cathartic about that. I also don't blame you for wanting to feel vindicated—it's nice to have those feelings confirmed by someone besides other women. 😳 dealing with sexism can create a lot of cognitive dissonance so we need reality confirmed. 7y

Started this tonight on audio, but I snagged the kindle version too so I can read along for quotes when I want. The narrator is great! I'm not entirely sure where the book is going yet, but the prose is decadent. Just like this #heavypour of dark red wine. 🍷🍷

I'm also watching When We Rise tonight, and I highly recommend it so far. It's a lot more intersectional than I was expecting, and that's a good thing!

CatLadyBibliophile No lie, I'm just super jealous of your wine 😂 7y
Megabooks I did audio and ebook on this one too. Both good! 7y
BookishFeminist @CatLadyBibliophile It's really good wine if you can find it! 😂😂 7y

A friend recommended this one, saying how creepy she found it. I read it in two sittings and it is unsettling.

Phew, this had many more layers than I expected it to, but I'm still torn. I'm a sucker for campus novels, so I held on as the typical dude psyche got creepier and creepier. It almost has two endings: one totally redeeming, brilliant twist and one gut-punch that needs a trigger warning. I almost wish it had made it through to the #ToB17 shortlist because I'd love to read discussion on it.

NovelVisits I reviewed Loner back in September and think you and I had a similar reaction to it. Working with young people, I thought David would have fallen somewhere on the autism spectrum because of his extreme social awkwardness while still being brilliant. 7y

My ten best books of 2016. Am eclectic list of favorites, many debuts. I tend to reward books that weren't perfect but took chances and whose authors have lots of ambition and promise. http://brokebybooks.com/best-books-2016

When I picked up Loner I knew it was in my wheelhouse, books set at university in New England, but I didn't know much more. It's a quick novel that slowly reeled me in as I got to know the main character, David. It's also the first book in a long time that I really liked but, at the same, disliked all of the main characters. The twist near the end and the ending are what make this novel though.

I'm a fan of unreliable narrators, but this guy was both too obviously unreliable, and too relentlessly unlikable. Still, the writing itself was undeniably well-crafted, so I can't quite pan it.
But I'd be interested to hear from people who liked it.

Reading at lunch with the help of my USB-heated narwhal slippers!

"Heated slippers? Don't you live in Puerto Rico?" ?
"Yes." ?
"Isn't it like 80-some degrees there?" ☉☉?
"Yes, but the A/C is freezing!" ❄❄☃

#seasonsreadings2016 #EReader I read on my phone, my computer, and my Kindle but my Kindle is upstairs and I haven't had any coffee yet so enjoy this screenshot. Also, can someone go up and get my Kindle? 😉

Jenshootsweddings Ughhhhh I hate when that happens! I'm known to start a brand new book just to avoid leaving whichever floor I'm on. 7y
LauraBeth My next house will have no stairs 😀 7y
MicheleinPhilly @Jenshootsweddings I've been running up and down the stairs for the past 3 days. I'm not doing it if I don't have to. 7y

MicheleinPhilly @LauraBeth One of the doctors that saw my wife was asking about our living situation. When we told her that we live in a 3 story house she said, "No elevator????" I almost bit my tongue in half to prevent myself from blurting, "This is Philly, not an episode of Million Dollar Listing. No, we don't have an elevator!" 7y
LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly 😂😂😂oh I definitely would have had to say something! 7y
saresmoore No elevator?! Hahahaha! Just have the butler run up and get your Kindle. 🙃 7y
MicheleinPhilly @saresmoore That's what I need - a butler! I've been serving as my wife's butler but I think I should get my own. 7y

Well-written and realistic, with great characterization and a perfect narrator's voice... Right up to the end (see comments). If you're interested in sociopaths/psychopaths/antisocial personality disorder, if you like Criminal Minds, this book might be for you. The narrator David is a sociopath/psychopath (depending on your preferred definitions) who fixates on a girl when he starts college. It's not a pleasant read, but it's very well done.

Caterina I found the ending seriously disappointing. After the climax, the episode between David and Veronica to which the plot had been building, it peters out weakly and doesn't ring true. Given that David is clearly a psychopath/sociopath/has ASPD, he would not have reacted to his failures with such resignation. I expected physical violence, anger, something. Wayne seems to have backed off in the very end. 7y

Ahhhhh to those of you who have read this book, I still think it's well written and the narrator's voice is perfectly done, but I also really like Sara and would want to be friends with her IRL, so the way David is treating her is killing me. 😫😡

Picked this one up to read in line for our early voting at City Hall today. Feels good to be done and I am hoping for the best but pretty stressed out 😕.

Who else early voted!? Or do you like waiting until Election Day? Or mail-in? 💙.

As for Loner, I can't put it down. Will probably finish it by tonight!

Soubhiville I voted last Monday! Felt good to be done and miss Tuesday's lines! 7y
Karkar I voted last week since I will be out of state on Tuesday. I am just ready for this whole thing to be over. I am so totally over being stressed out 7y
Theresa I did mail-in/absentee this year because I'm traveling for work. I've been ready for this election to be over for months, but especially since I mailed my ballot. 😆 7y

LauraBrook Voted early three weeks ago, and I'm so glad to have it off my mind! I'm tired of avoiding all tv and radio (cannot stand one more second of any political ad)! 7y
BooksForEmpathy @Soubhiville Yes! Agree! @Karkar Me too. I just want to KNOW already. @Theresa You are on top of it! @LauraBrook I know. It feel so all-consuming right now. Almost over! 7y
Reviewsbylola I'll be voting on Tuesday. I considered voting early but the location wasn't very convenient for me. My polling place has never been super crowded, not even during presidential elections, so I am hoping the wait won't be too long. 7y
Bette Glad you voted. This whole experience has been so stressful. We'll vote Tuesday. Just want it over. 7y
NovelGirl82 I voted early, a week ago. I agree, I'm ready for it to be over. We're so close!! 7y
Owlizabeth Virginia doesn't really do early voting, so I am definitely going on Tuesday and I'm so excited to get counted and be done!! #imwithher 7y
Godmotherx5 I voted early. The line during the primaries was almost 2hrs. I don't have the patience for that. 7y
Suet624 Voting on Tuesday. This small Vermont town doesn't see lengthy lines. Will be glad to have it over. I think. 7y
BookishFeminist Voting on Tuesday. Virginia doesn't have early voting unless you work out of county, so I don't have a choice. But my polling place is right across the street from me so I'm hoping to get in line early & then grab some breakfast! 7y
BookishShelly I'm a mail-in voter starting this year. I love that it's an option here in California since standing in long lines with my energetic 3yo is not my idea of a good time. 7y
JackieSmith My husband & I vote together after work. Finalizing & filling in my sample ballot today. There are some crazy propositions on the California ballot. 7y
Notafraidofwords Totally reading loner now and it's like: I can't look away! 7y
BooksForEmpathy @Reviewsbylola Awesome! Hope it goes quickly for you; however it will hopefully be worth the wait even if it's a long one. @Bette Yes. I just want people to vote and I hope they come out and do so. Nervous to think of what could happen if not enough people come out! @NovelGirl82 Ah! Almost! @Owlizabeth Forgot that some states don't do it. And yes! #imwithher Glad you're coming out! @Godmotherx5 So long! Hope you brought a book!! @Suet624 same! 7y
ReadingEnvy I like to do it the day of and see all my neighbors (and think "I am canceling out one of their votes," haha) 7y
BooksForEmpathy @BookishFeminist Very convenient! Mine is like that too, but I couldn't wait! I'm too antsy. @BookishShelly I signed up for mail-in this year but I kind of like the option; it felt so good to be there today. As long as you're voting anything works!!! @JackieSmith Oh I KNOW! My boyfriend and I had a date night where we went through them all. I like your voting "date" ?. @Notafraidofwords Hahaha! Yes! It reminds me of "You"! 7y
BooksForEmpathy @ReadingEnvy Hahaha! Thank goodness! What state are you from? 7y
ApoptyGina69 I did my first vote by mail this time around. My polling place is a tiny, stuffy, smelly room with these ancient curtained partitions and I just hated the experience for what is a fun event, so spread out on the kitchen table with my notes and pen, I filled in little rectangles with glee! ⚖️🗳 7y
ReadingEnvy @BooksForEmpathy I live in upstate SC, the reddest part of the reddest state, home of Bob Jones University, a Confederate memorabilia store, etc 7y
mauveandrosysky I voted Friday! Yay early voting. Also I'm dying to hear your thoughts about LONER — particularly the ending. 7y
GlitteryOtters Our state doesn't have early voting. Some people tried to get it on this year as a ballot initiative for us to vote on, but it didn't qualify. Maybe some future year it finally will. In the meantime, I'll be voting on Tuesday, with my husband after he finishes work & school for the day. If early voting, or absentee voting was allowed without us having to prove why we're eligible, I'd gladly do either in a heartbeat. 7y
kspenmoll We do not have early voting in my state (CT) so I will vote Tuesday😊 7y
