Another amazing book by Atul Gawande!!! We can always strive to be better. Through our medical history we have often thought that we had the best medicine, the best technic, the best treatment, and then along comes someone else who shows us a Better way. I hope I never get so stuck in my ways that I refuse to believe a Better way is possible. #AtulGawande #Nurselife #Better #themoreyouknow #putyourprideaside

An extremely interesting look at the lives and decisions of a doctor. Gawande focuses on diligence, ingenuity and the ethical dilemmas faced daily. Really gripping stories are described giving example of being and doing better in the challenging setting of medicine. Recommend

mom2bugnbee Stacked! Thank you for this! 4y
Crazeedi @mom2bugnbee hope you enjoy! All his books are very good 4y
mom2bugnbee @Crazeedi I'm a veterinarian who now teaches full-time rather than practicing, but I'm quite sure that I'll be thrown back into my ethics classes when I read this! Thank you! 4y

I find his anecdotes interesting and much better laid out then his analysis of better vs good enough systems of medicine. I would have even just been interested in how he got his start and moved from intern to his own practice.
Maybe if is a bit dated but 13 years on I find it surprising that through the entire chapter about pregnancy/child birth and morbidity race is never brought up.

Thanks to everyone who shared their good thoughts and support when I was having loads of anxiety last week. This is such a lovely community and while I don't share my emotional state very often (and I'm honestly a little embarrassed that I did last week), it's very comforting to know that this is truly a safe space to do it. Readers are the best. ❤️❤️

Flowers were from a League of Craftsmen fair I went to last weekend. Aren't they lovely?

laurieluna Glad you're feeling better. I regularly have periods of time where anxiety gets the better of me. This app has helped me through a couple of my most recent! Xx 6y
Liatrek It‘s a lovely picture 😊glad your feeling better ❤️ 6y
CouronneDhiver Please don‘t stop sharing... it‘s beautiful to know that I‘m not alone, that we can support one another AND that there‘s always an end in sight. 😊😊😊 6y

How do you become better? Gawande demonstrates how public health officials fighting suspicion, surgeons in India with inadequate staffing and supplies, and healthcare facilities in America studying genetic diseases do their best to beat the odds and improve their practices. This is a wonderful, compassionate, and insightful book about present day health challenges and how we can face them and do better.

Tadams4 Sounds compelling! 7y
Nebklvr @Tadams4 It is! Also very easy to listen to. I don‘t always have the best of luck with audio books but this one held my interest 7y

Though published a decade ago, Atul Gawande's reflections on performance in the medical field are still relevant today. Collecting essays under broad themes of diligence, doing right and ingenuity, he explores topics as diverse as handwashing, administering the death penalty, and knowing when to stop fighting. It's a fascinating, highly readable account that will provide much food for thought.

Exploring my library's new subscription to Hoopla, I downloaded this audiobook to listen on my walks. Atul Gawande (author of Being Mortal) reflects on how doctors try to improve services through diligence, doing right and ingenuity, three themes under which he organized this collection of essays. Lots of food for thought, and though it was published a decade ago it doesn't seem dated.

SqueakyChu All of this author‘s books are superb! LT‘s Kidzdoc gives them high ratings as well. 😊 (edited) 7y
bell7 @SqueakyChu I really liked Being Mortal but hadn't read anything else by him. I really wanted to read The Checklist Manifesto, but this was the only one of his titles available on Hoopla 7y
SqueakyChu @bell7 I‘m a big proponent of checklists. I made up my own and used them all the time when I was a home health agency auditor. The Checklist Manifesto was great as well. I hope you also get a chance to read it. (edited) 7y

I was away last week and didn't have time to suspend holds, so of course a bunch of books came in. My BF was able to make a library run on Monday and picked up my holds. But more came in, so I made another library run today (now that I'm back).

And three more holds are in transit...

Lindy Eep! Happy reading. 8y
rabbitprincess @Lindy Thanks! Also DVDs to watch. Really looking forward to the second series of The Hollow Crown! 8y

My public health nerd self loved this book. As a public health data analyst, this book helped me see my purpose in my job in a big picture way and inspired me to keep doing what I do. Maybe I made the correct career choice after all.

BookMusings Atul Gawande has a bunch of amazing sounding books. I've read Being Mortal, but I really want to read Complications. It sounds fascinating! 8y
