"A fantastic new talent" HELEN MARSHALL An extraordinary, page-turning Gothic mystery set in the wilds of the Norfolk Fens from the BSFA-shortlisted author. London, 1901. After the death of Queen Victoria the city heaves with the uncanny and the eerie. Sances are held and the dead are called upon from darker realms. Samuel Moncrieff, recovering from a recent tragedy of his own, meets Helena Walton-Cisneros, one of London's most reputed mediums. But Helena is not what she seems and she's enlisted by the elusive Lady Matthews to solve a twenty-year-old mystery: the disappearance of her three stepdaughters who vanished without a trace on the Norfolk Fens. But the Fens are a liminal land, where folk tales and dark magic still linger. With locals that speak of devilmen and catatonic children found on the Broads, Helena finds the answer to the mystery leads back to where it started: Samuel Moncrieff.

Convoluted and muddled. There‘s no real resolution to the mystery of the missing girls. In the end, I found the story utterly forgettable.

Book 2/5 done for #marchunshelfing readathon

Clwojick Darn! I would‘ve totally bought this book for the cover alone. Then I would have been extra let down. 5y
Mrs_B @Clwojick I was thinking exactly the same. Such a shame - the cover was so pretty! 5y
wanderinglynn @Clwojick @Mrs_B yes, the cover is what caught my eye to start with and then I thought it sounded interesting. Sadly, it didn‘t work out for me. 5y

This is the book‘s back cover. I‘m 1/3 of the way through. The prose is well-written, even beautiful. But I have a lot of confusion. There‘s a character called Eliza. No idea who she is or what she‘s doing. Another called Samuel, who has a bit more context, but still not sure his purpose. And the main mystery/plot (shown here) has barely started.

Has anyone else read this book? Does it eventually pull together? #confusedreader

Booklover57 Sounds intriguing. 5y
wanderinglynn @Booklover57 I thought so too, but the reality is not quite the same. I finally looked at some reviews on Goodreads and a lot say what I am feeling—interesting premise, but the execution failed. 5y

My hair salon is next door to a local indie bookstore. It would have been rude not to visit the store since I was *right* there. 😉 And of course, it would also be rude not to support them. I cannot go into an indie bookshop and not support them. Really, it would be anti-literary to not support them. So see, I‘m just doing my pro-literary duty. 😂
