House of Glass
House of Glass: The Story and Secrets of a Twentieth-Century Jewish Family | Hadley Freeman
10 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
A writer investigates her familys secret history, uncovering a story that spans a century, two World Wars, and three generations. Hadley Freeman knew her grandmother Sara lived in France just as Hitler started to gain power, but rarely did anyone in her family talk about it. Long after her grandmothers death, she found a shoebox tucked in the closet containing photographs of her grandmother with a mysterious stranger, a cryptic telegram from the Red Cross, and a drawing signed by Picasso. This discovery sent Freeman on a decade-long quest to uncover the significance of these keepsakes, taking her from Picassos archives in Paris to a secret room in a farmhouse in Auvergne to Long Island to Auschwitz. Freeman pieces together the puzzle of her familys past, discovering more about the lives of her grandmother and her three brothers, Jacques, Henri, and Alex. Their stories sometimes typical, sometimes astonishingreveal the broad range of experiences of Eastern European Jews during Holocaust. This thrilling family saga is filled with extraordinary twists, vivid characters, and famous cameos, illuminating the Jewish and immigrant experience in the World War II era. Addressing themes of assimilation, identity, and home, this powerful story about the past echoes issues that remain relevant today.

#AdventRecommends December 22nd

Freeman is looking into her family history from after WWI until present time. The focus is mostly on her grandmother and her grandmother‘s siblings.

After her grandmother dies, Freeman decides to look into her life and that of her siblings. Her grandmother grew up in Chrzanow in Poland not far from Auschwitz. They were poor and Jewish, and when the pogroms started they moved to Paris.

The book covers the 20th century and I loved reading about the Glass siblings.

I loved this one.

jlhammar I have this on my shelves. Looking forward to it! 2y

I loved this memoir / family history. It's a pageturner and truly fascinating. Also not all happy endings, it feels like proper history told without favouritism, opening up private lives to connect them to the famous bits. The sections on 1950s USA and the Paris art and fashion worlds were terrific.

Mehso-so

The author found a shoebox of mementos in her grandmother‘s closet that led to researching her family‘s history during the Holocaust. It was not so memorable except for her uncle Alex. Picasso and Dior had cameos in the story. I appreciate all the research, but it‘s just a so-so for the amount of time invested in listening. 2/5🖤s

Mehso-so

I have tremendous respect for author Hadley Freeman. It‘s clear she spent years researching her family memoir as well as conducting an in depth study of World History. My complaint is that this book sometimes focused on inconsequential material and felt unnecessarily shallow. While there was a really fascinating story here, it was overshadowed by Freeman‘s other indulgences. #MoreMehThanYeah #BorrowNotBuy

Wait, what??? I did not know that Hugo Boss “designed” and manufactured the Nazi‘s uniforms 😡This book is EXTREMELY detailed. Not sure the casual reader would have the patience to get through all the information but I‘m already 9 hours in...

squirrelbrain A comedian in the UK, Joe Lycett, recently changed his name to Hugo Boss. It was in protest at them challenging small companies who used the word ‘Boss‘ but he also highlighted the Nazi history... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-51703859 5y
Cinfhen That‘s hilarious what comedian Joe Lycett did @squirrelbrain .... not that I really buy Hugo Boss but now I‘ll make sure never to let ANYONE in my family buy that brand....I know some of my brothers favor his suits 🙄 5y
TrishB I really liked their perfume a few years ago and then found this out and couldn‘t buy the perfume anymore. I‘m never sure if this sort of thing is the right response or not. 5y

Cinfhen My MIL would not buy ANY German product @TrishB and my husband used to tease her about it...but making those uniforms really leave a bad taste in my mouth. 5y
TrishB Understand that totally! It‘s our way of having a little control. I was always a bit surprised when Gwyneth Paltrow advertised for them. 5y
BarbaraBB I knew that about Hugo Boss and it always kept me from buying his designs. My kids do though 😱 5y
Cinfhen Hmmm, I forgot about GP being the face of Boss @TrishB ☹️ i won‘t hold it against her 😉 5y

Cinfhen What‘s your weather like @Megabooks ??? 5y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I know it‘s been on the cooler side, but tbh, I‘ve only been outside once in the last three days. I haven‘t been feeling well at all. I don‘t like complaining, but things really haven‘t been good, but I‘ve been trying to stay positive. I have, to make myself feel better 😉😉, been ordering books. One from Parnassus, three from Amazon, one from BD, and one from Feminist Book Club. Nothing like retail therapy!! 💙💙 5y
Cinfhen I‘m so sorry you‘re not feeling well. It‘s so upsetting 😞wishing you comfort / excited to see what new books are arriving 😍 5y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks dear friend!! 💖💖 at least from reading this book, I have an idea of where I need to go. 5y
