The new novel by Wilbur Smith and the prequel to A Falcon Flies. 'The right of the cat over the mouse, of the strong over the weak. The natural law of existence.' Augustus Mungo St John, A Falcon Flies The son of a wealthy plantation owner and a doting mother, Augustus Mungo St John is accustomed to the wealth and luxuries his privilege has afforded him. That is until he returns from university to discover his family ruined, his inheritance stolen and his childhood sweetheart, Camilla, taken by the conniving Chester Marion. Fuelled by anger, and love, Mungo swears vengeance and devotes his life to saving Camilla - and destroying Chester. Camilla, trapped in New Orleans and powerless to her position as a kept slave and Chester's brutish behaviour, must learn to do whatever it takes to survive. As Mungo battles his own fate and misfortune to achieve the revenge that drives him, and regain his power in the world, he must question what it takes for a man to survive when he has nothing, and what he is willing to do in order to get what he wants. An action-packed and gripping adventure by bestselling author, Wilbur Smith, about one man's quest for revenge, the brutality of slavery in America and the imbalance between humans that can drive - or defeat - us.

Mungo is a character that shows just how powerful loyalty can be, and the risks people are willing to take when there is mutual loyalty and respect. He also shows how consuming revenge can become. Camilia was my favorite character; she is a very strong, smart woman who is forced to adapt in some very intense circumstances. This was a novel that I really enjoyed and could immerse myself in.

A man's transformation from troll to total monster. This is an old-fashioned macho man epic revenge adventure that maybe would have been seen as progressive twenty years ago, but now, well, it's kinda uncomfortable.
Long review! https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3225541567
It's well written and I liked it more than I thought I would, but I don't recommend it unless you're already a fan of this series.

Won this one and feeling very hesitant about it. Boiled down, it's about a slaveowner on a revenge mission. So far he's an unsympathetic troll, and the author isn't trying to play on the "some slaveowners were okay people" garbage that you see sometimes. So I'm onboard with this as a portrait of a villain so far.
But I swear, if it tries to romanticize his "relationship" with his slave/girlfriend, I'm going to frisbee-throw it into the Hudson.

j9brown I looked further into it because I was wondering why anyone would even write this is the first place. Apparently this author is very popular and this character is a villain in some of his other books, and his fans wanted his story. So this book didn't just come out of nowhere. I won it so I'll read and review it, but I feel a little icky about it I guess 🤢 5y
