A new author for me, this first in the Kate Shugak series, is centered around Kate, a native Aleut who works as a PI in Alaska. As an expert in her local Alaskan environs, she is asked to search for a park ranger who has been missing for 6 weeks and the FBI investigator who was sent to look for him.
I really enjoyed this book which is high on character development, a tight storyline, a suspense-filled plot, 🔻

robinb a surprise denouement and surprisingly, lots of humor. Kate is a force to be reckoned with…tough, resourceful and strong-willed. Along with her half-wolf, half-husky dog Mutt, there are a colorful array of community and law officials introduced and along for the ride as well. And I‘m happy to join the journey. 4.25/5 #LMPBC 8mo

This is the first in the Kate Shugak series. There are 23 books in this series and then a spin off type series with another main character. Kate quit her job to return to her father‘s homestead in Alaska after a particularly nasty case. She eventually becomes a PI/consultant figure as she has knowledge and connections to the area.

PuddleJumper It is set in Alaska, an area I know nothing about and haven‘t read anything set there. The author does a great job of describing it, explaining the history and the politics. Sometimes it can get a bit much – I skip a lot of the aeroplane stuff – but overall it is very evocative.

PuddleJumper I just these as palate cleanser type books as they are easy to read, the characters are fun, and they aren‘t overly taxing. I would say read in order, there is some stuff that impacts the character later on.

I love discovering a new mystery series! I am hooked on Kate Shugak! She is fierce! Set in Alaska, this book highlights the insular world of The Park and Kate‘s vast, extended family. There‘s snow and cold and sniping and secrets and murder. It‘s a short book and a quick read that packs a punch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#20Series20Days Day 1:

The Kate Shugak series is definitely one of my #Top20Series. The characters are fantastic—not only the titular character & her dog Mutt but also all of the secondary characters—but honestly, the setting, Alaska, often steals the show. Seriously, sometimes it feels as if you are shivering in the cold of deep winter along with Kate & Mutt. Great writing, characters & setting make each new book a must-read for me.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 This is a series I still need to start. 4y
TrishB I love this series and I agree, a lot of the time it‘s the landscape that wins it. But Kate is great! 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve read a couple of these and enjoyed them. I love the Alaska setting. 4y

Kate Shugak is asked to look into the disappearance of a well-connected park ranger and the investigator originally sent to find him.

It all feels a bit like the Wild West, though it held my attention more than Westerns do. The interest lies more in the Alaskan setting than the actual mystery, which was pretty run-of-the-mill.

Kate wrestled the bottle out of his hand and held it out of his reach. “You know Miller, Martin. The park ranger who was going out with Xenia.”

Martin‘s brow furrowed in deep thought. “Xenia.”

“Your sister,” Kate specified.

Martin transferred his wavering gaze to his sister‘s pinched face, and frowned. “I remember.”

“Thank God,” Jack said to Kate. “I thought for a second we were going to have to introduce them.”

Badass female main character. Intriguing secondary characters. Awesome location. Mystery felt a little rushed but still good. Will be looking for more in this series.
