Questionable Creatures
Questionable Creatures: A Bestiary | Pauline Baynes
7 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
"Bestiaries" - small illustrated books on all the creatures thought to exist in the world - are perhaps the most entertaining literature to have come down to us from the Middle Ages. They included detailed descriptions of the characteristics and habits of animals, fish, birds, insects and mythological creatures, many of the 'facts' unproven, inaccurate and bizarre. Now the legendary illustrator, Pauline Baynes, has spun together a gloriously amusing text and delightful illustrations "with some liberty" from various bestiaries in England, adding a fascinating introduction to give the full, fabulous flavour of these mediaeval gems of misbelief.

#ReadingResolutions Day 2: This compilation of questionable creatures include the #😈. Some are still familiar such as the lion, tiger, horse, camel, birds, hyena, elephant, crocodile, wolf, serpent, panther. The exquisite thing in this little booklet is they are joined by the manticore, mermaids or sirens, bonnacon, gryphon, unicorn, satyr, yale, the phoenix, and even the devil himself. A collection of odd and unusual "facts" about a hotch-potch of beasts, both real and mythical, culled from various medieval bestiaries and plonked on the page with about as much panache as a dinner lady serving mashed potato at an infant school.

Ah, but the illustrations are little jewel-like confections, lovingly crafted by a Michelin-starred pâtissière. I love you, Pauline Baynes!

How do you "add" a book or author? I see some of her books on here but there are so many more and I love her!

BookishMarginalia You search for the author name and then scroll down to the end of the booklist, where it gives you the choice to suggest a book. 8y
Smashlee Crud...yeah I did that. Not all of her books are listed 🙁 8y
