The Wave
The Wave: In the Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks and Giants of the Ocean | Susan Casey
A riveting and rollicking tour-de-force about the terrifying power of nature's most deadly phenomena colossal waves and the scientists and super surfers who are obsessed with them. The New York Times bestselling author of The Devil's Teeth probes the dramatic convergence of baffling gargantuan waves that pummel oil rigs and sink massive ships, the extreme surfers willing to stare down death in order to ride them, and the marine scientists trying to unlock the physics of these waves, the climate changes that are provoking them, and what chaos they might wreak. Susan Casey explores the phenomenon of monster waves and how they have become an obsession for extreme surfers like Laird Hamilton who serves as the author's guide as she takes the reader into the intense, white-knuckle world of 100-foot waves. From the Hardcover edition.

For what this book was about, it was great and I loved listening to it on audio. However, I was absolutely livid about the dismissive treatment of women in big wave surfing. There was a brief acknowledgement of Maya Gabeira and her accomplishments, but it was fleeting and no commentary on the sexist treatment of her as a female surfer by her male peers. I strongly feel that this deserved explicit treatment.

☀️ I love it all! But would like a bit of each...couldn‘t choose just one.
⛰ It‘s probably a tie between mountains and beach and I‘ll pick mountains.
🎵 I love a good outdoor music festival with crafts and drinks!
⛺️ I like to camp and I love to be home. Never glamped! Hotels are delicious too.
📖 The tagged book was a great non-fiction read about waves, surfing, etc.

wanderinglynn Outdoor music festivals are so fun! Thanks for playing! ⛺️ 10mo

finished this one on audio on the way home from work yesterday & quite enjoyed it. I liked how the author wove different perspectives of these waves - from the surfers huting out the best waves (I never knew toe in surfing was a thing before I read this) to the scientists research on them ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book, along with “Born to Run,” kicked off a fascination with GOOD non-fiction books for me. And by GOOD, I mean they taught me something I hadn‘t previously known and also kept me entertained. This book alternates with stories of surfers and their adventures with the history of surfing and causation of waves, etc. I recommend! #readingresolutions #waves @Jess7

I'm in, @gibblr , my closest was The Wave lent to me by @WanderingBookaneer . I think my people can agree this is fitting given my sllligghty paranoid nature.

gibblr It sure does seem like there's an abundance of trouble these days as well...😕 3y
Figgy Well that is also true... 3y
