A Brief History of Everyone who Ever Lived
A Brief History of Everyone who Ever Lived: The Stories in Our Genes | Adam Rutherford
This is a story about you. It is the history of who you are and how you came to be. It is unique to you, as it is to each of the 100 billion modern humans who have ever drawn breath. But it is also our collective story, because in every one of our genomes we each carry the history of our species - births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration and a lot of sex. Since scientists first read the human genome in 2001 it has been subject to all sorts of claims, counterclaims and myths. In fact, as Adam Rutherford explains, our genomes should be read not as instruction manuals, but as epic poems. DNA determines far less than we have been led to believe about us as individuals, but vastly more about us as a species. In this captivating journey through the expanding landscape of genetics, Adam Rutherford reveals what our genes now tell us about history, and what history tells us about our genes. From Neanderthals to murder, from redheads to race, dead kings to plague, evolution to epigenetics, this is a demystifying and illuminating new portrait of who we are and how we came to be.

Alas, we are no more or less evolved thant any creature. Uniqueness is terribly overrated.

Good morning my beloved one ! I'm loving this in so many ways. I cannot even begin to explain. 🤩🤩 if you're curious about science is a true pick. And he uses language comprehensive even for those outside this fields. Recommend *****

Really easy to grasp dive into what “ancestry” means. If you‘ve ever had your 🧬 tested, this book will help you understand the significance (or lack there of) of your results.

So chill out, redheads. You're safe.

(He goes into the genetic reasons for this in a bit more depth.)

Clare-Dragonfly 😂 Ian still barely has hair, but we‘re hoping it will be red. I‘m doing my part to keep redheads in existence by having a red headed reproductive partner (and possibly having the allele myself)! 5y

I was going to finally finish Comey today, but then Overdrive suddenly dropped A Brief History... Choices choices.

panoramix Well, my kobo refuses to download anything other than the store preview of a brief history, so that takes the decision out of my hands. 6y

You have to love a genetics writer who casually alludes to William Blake (and, yes I know, to the British hymn thus derived)!!

So far, this is definitely the liveliest discussion of genetics and evolution I‘ve ever read 😃💚📚!

Th grades are in. The desk is cleaned out (they‘re recarpeting our office over the summer).

The humidity is 95% and the trees are still dripping (so no audiowalk for me).

What better day for a bit of a “lie in” (23 and me says I‘m 52% British 😍)!

💚📚❤️📚💙📚

Hollie We are getting carpet in our offices this summer, too! I haven‘t boxed up all of my books yet, though 😬 6y
KimHM It feels slightly weird, to box up the office even tho you‘re not moving, doesn‘t it @Hollie ?🙃 6y

An overview of our current knowledge of genetics and how it relates to us. Covering the development of Homo Sapiens, our ancestors and how we are still related to them and how modern moved out of Africa, our growing understanding of our DNA and how it is influenced by factors such as epigenetics. The takeaway message for me is we are learning more everyday, but the resulting picture is growing as a result more rather than less complicated.

Very readable if a little mind-blowing about some details. I have to allow some of the claims time to percolate through my brain.

RaimeyGallant Nice reviews. :) And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you're interested. :) 6y

I liked this book a lot, it's science explained in layman terms. But, and you knew there was a but, I think not all facts that were presented are 100% true. Things kept piling up where I thought, wait a second, you've read about a different time frame, ...

Although I would still recommend it to anyone who is interested in genetics, do read it - for the scientists among you, don't get aggravated about the glitches in timeline and geography.

julesG @Simona Don't worry, this is non-fiction 7y
Simona I know, but I still have nightmares because of the footnotes in 7y
julesG @Simona It reminded me of IJ, which I did not read and don't intend to. I admire everyone who tackled that brick. 7y

It's probably just me and the scientific part of my heart, but I find this a strong opener to a scientific book about genetics.

#NetGalley #ARC (North American edition)

Marchpane Oh, this sounds great! Why haven't I read this yet? 7y
julesG @Marchpane Just what I thought when I picked it from my virtual NetGalley pile. 7y
