The Light We Lost mixes with a touch of Daisy Jones and the Six in this novel of first love, passion, and the power of choice--and how we cannot escape the people we are meant to be. Two loves. Two choices. One chance to follow her dreams. Emily has come a long way since she lost her two passions fifteen years ago: music, and Rob. She's a psychologist at NYU who helps troubled college students like the one she once was. Together with her caring doctor husband, Ezra, she has a beautiful life. They're happy. They hope to start a family. But when a tragic event in Emily's present too closely echoes her past, and parts of her story that she'd hoped never to share come to light, her perfect life is suddenly upturned. Then Emily hears a song on the radio about the woman who got away. The melody and voice are hauntingly familiar. Could it be? As Emily's past passions come roaring back into her life, she'll find herself asking: Who is she meant to be? Who is she meant to love?

I gifted myself the Up All Night Box from #OnceUponABookClub because it‘s a fun way to celebrate New Year‘s Eve & I like the 40 book challenge which if you complete the poster (in the tube), they send you a free book. Although haven‘t opened it up yet, I got a sneak peek of the challenge on StoryGraph & coincidently, the tagged book that I received this weekend for completing the 2023 challenge, fits prompt #32: “A book with a playlist” 📚💚

Now I only dream about your father sometimes, instead of every night. And I dream about you even less. I cringe to write that, but it‘s true. I didn‘t think I‘d feel guilty for healing. But I guess, in some ways, I do 🎹💭

I enjoyed this one much more than The Light We Lost... maybe because I could relate to some of the feelings Emily went through. Marriage is hard! Fighting for it is hard and I think it was accurately depicted in these pages, it's easy to find solstice in someone other than your partner when the other person validates feelings and makes you feel seen/heard again.

This is a book about choices. We get where we are because of the choices we make, or those that are made without our input, & sometimes is good to reassess: if you had made different choices where would you be now? Emily gets the chance to reconsider some of her choices & we walk along with her as she chooses what to keep and what to change. I didn't agree with her at places along the way & her ending seems too pat but I like where she ended up.

The comparisons to Daisy and the Six are valid. The ending is hokey, but it‘s the one I wanted.

This was a whirlwind! I wanted a different ending and felt there were some missing pieces but overall it was pretty good!

I liked this. It was a romantic drama where most of my romance reads tend to be of the comedic variety. What I most appreciated was reading two timelines of Emily‘s life come together and none of the characters were jerks in this messy life - just life with all its options. I had no idea how it would end, but was satisfied with the conclusion. However....
(More in comment)

marleed There is a thing that bugged me. The author attributed the famous quote, “Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.” to the mother of the character, Rob. Three opportunities and she never clarified it as attributed to John Lennon (and music is key in this book). It reads as though she created the line for her character. That does not seem okay... so, maybe it‘s not the end. 3y
Megabooks That‘s weird about the Lennon quote. 3y
marleed @Megabooks Isn‘t that weird!? It honestly doesn‘t take away from the story, but I‘ve always loved that line. I think I heard it first in the Marigold Hotel movie, and then read about it being attributed to John Lennon although he may gotten the line from someone else. But at the very least, the author did not create the line for her character. In a book where music is key, it might bug more readers than just me! 3y

Listening to the tagged author and Katherine Center talk about the tagged book while knitting. What a delightful chat, I‘m on the library holds list but kind of want to buy the book now 🤷🏼‍♀️☺️

Everything After by Jill Santopolo is a complex and emotional love story. I became an instant fan of Santopolo after reading The Light We Lost and Everything After has everything I expect in her novels. The story is emotional and realistic.

Thank you Putnam books, Penguin Random House Audio, and Edelweiss for Everything After.
