I enjoyed this a lot! I read a lot about education admissions for my job and this was more readable and enjoyable by half than all of them - really good both as a true crime story of a fraud and a commentary on the state of college admissions at the moment.

This reread covers the “Varsity Blues” scandal in which a rogue independent college counselor facilitated bribes to get students into top colleges through their athletics programs. The book follows a number of people implicated including celebrities like Felicity Huffman as well as the man who coordinated it all, Rick Singer. A good #audiobook if you‘re looking for some narrative nonfiction/light true crime. 👍🏻

Cinfhen I started this but never finished it/ need to go back. It was really good 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I predict you‘d like it!! 😁 2y

If you‘re looking for a full overview of the Varsity Blues case, I recommend the Netflix doc. This book does a good job of putting that information into the broader conversation about educational privilege and entitlement. Really gripping (read it in less than 24 hours) and I think should be required reading for parents. #netgalley

This book follows the rise and fall of Rick Singer, a private college admissions counselor that used his “side door” to get children of the rich and famous into top colleges. Dubbed the Varsity Blues scandal, Singer used the preferential treatment athletes get in admissions to bribe coaches to “recruit” his clients as walk ons to the team. Singer also had ACT test takers that could hit a certain score. A wild look into how different the 1% is.

KarenUK Sounds fascinating! And a great choice for #darkacademia ! Hadn‘t even considered non-fiction 🤷‍♀️💕 3y

Come-read-with-me This sounds fascinating. Being in academia I want to learn more about this topic. 3y
Crazeedi Definitely insight into the ultra rich I'm sure 3y
Megabooks @Crazeedi it was really crazy because in one chapter, she talked about private school admissions from preschool through 12 in LA. These parents are writing multiple 5- and 6-figure checks every year - tuition, galas, boosters, etc., so when some guy that their friend recommended said, “give me 200k to get your kid in USC or Georgetown,” it just doesn‘t seem weird to them. 3y
Megabooks @Come-read-with-me oh I definitely think you‘d find it interesting. I think there are corruptible people in every vocation, and I find it fascinating to see how that happens. This is the kind of true crime I like. 3y
Megabooks @KarenUK thanks!! More than half of what I read is nonfiction, so I sort of have to think that way! 😜❤️ 3y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I thought this sounded like one you‘d enjoy. 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Thanks for thinking of me! 3y
BarbaraBB This sounds super intriguing but also kind of Fantasy to me 😉 (edited) 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it‘s very different over here than the Netherlands!!! 3y
Cinfhen Soooooo interested in this book!! I‘ve requested it from my library and hoping it shows up on Scribd 💚🤞🏽is the narration good?? 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, it is! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 that you can get it! 3y
Cinfhen Thanks 😊 3y
Kalalalatja I was thinking the same @BarbaraBB 😅 Education is free in Denmark from primary school to University, so it feels so weird to me, that this case even exists 🤯 3y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja Exactly! Did I tell you my son comes to Denmark in September? It‘s for an exchange in his study. He‘ll be in Copenhagen for 5 months! 3y
UwannaPublishme You find the most intriguing books! Must add this one to my list. 3y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB that is so awesome, I hope he‘ll like Copenhagen! 🤞What‘s he going to study? 3y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja He studies International Business Administration and can follow some courses in Denmark. I‘ve been in Copenhagen with him a few years ago and ever since he has wanted to return. Do you know the city good, what neighbourhoods are nice for students to start looking for a place to live? 3y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB I don‘t know it that well, since I live in the opposite end of the country (almost), but I have some friends who live on Nørrebro, Valby and Ørestaden, which they are happy about. I do think all of those are some way away from the University, but I could be wrong. 3y
Crazeedi @Megabooks I cant even comprehend the $$$ it blows my mind 3y

Two new releases makes for one great (night) day of reading. I‘m already over halfway through the tagged, which I was able to snag from the library at midnight. It‘s a fantastic look at the Varsity Blues scandal!

I used a credit on the one I‘ll tag below. It has an all-star list of narrators, including Dion Graham and Rebecca Lowman.

I love #newreleasetuesday!! 🎧 #audiobook
