"A country fighting to stay free. A woman with an impossible decision. In November of 1939, Sini Toivola is sure of two things: she loves Marko Linna, and she has a comfortable life in Helsinki. But when the massive Soviet army invades her beloved homeland and Marko spurns her affections, her life is turned upside down. Needing a fresh start, Sini decides to join the female volunteer corps--the Lotta Svrd--and is sent to serve near the front lines. Service at a field hospital proves a good distraction--until Sini discovers a Russian soldier lost behind their camp. Duty requires her to turn him in, but her heart begs to keep him safe and help him escape. Torn between love for her country and love for her enemy, Sini must choose--but no matter what choice she makes, heart-wrenching consequences await them all."--Back cover.

I traveled to Finland for this amazing read. Set during WWII it takes place during the Winter War when Russia invaded Finland. This is both a romance (sweet) and historical fiction. Prepare yourself and maybe (totally do) have Kleenex handy. #travelthroughbooks #Finland #sisu #mayreading

During WWII, the Soviets invaded Finland. This is the story of 3 Finns in the Winter War: a surgeon, a nurse, & a volunteer in the war effort, & 1 Soviet soldier. The main character is irritating initially, but she matures past it. The war is brutal and #Finland has no hope, yet puts up an amazing fight in far below-zero winter. This is a quick story about a history few of us know with well-developed characters. Highly recommended. ⬇️

This was an excellent book! I will write a review soon. The author has written a number of books set in #Finland and I intend to check them out. My sister-in-law is from Helsinki and I‘m really enjoying reading about Finnish history. (The books she recommended to me haven‘t been translated into English.) I knew nothing about its history. I hope y‘all will consider this author for the #readingeurope2020 challenge. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

BarbaraBB Thanks for the recommendation! I will surely check out this author! 😘 4y

Book coincidences: I just finished Purge today, largely about the Soviet takeover of Estonia & the Estonians hoping Truman would save them. I‘ve been reading this one about the Soviet invasion of #Finland and this quote could have been from Purge. In fact I was getting the two books mixed up. This one also has an annoying main female character but I have high hopes for her and this one‘s not as boring as Purge. #readingeurope2020
