Haunted by her sister's disappearance, a troubled woman becomes consumed by past secrets in this gripping thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Vanishing Year. When Hannah Maloney's aunt dies in a car accident, she returns to her family's castle in the Catskills and the epicenter of a childhood trauma: her sister's unsolved disappearance. It's been seventeen years, and though desperate to start a new life with her fianc, Hannah is compelled to question the events of her last summer at Brackenhill. When a human bone is found near the estate, Hannah is convinced it belongs to her long-lost sister. She launches her own investigation into that magical summer that ended in a nightmare. As strange happenings plague the castle, Hannah uncovers disturbing details about the past and startling realizations about her own repressed childhood memories. Fueled by guilt over her sister's vanishing, Hannah becomes obsessed with discovering what happened all those years ago, but by the time Hannah realizes some mysteries are best left buried, it's too late to stop digging. Overwhelmed by what she has exposed, Hannah isn't sure her new life can survive her old ghosts.

1/27/2021 A decent suspense story. The narrators returns to a castle where she spent several summers as a young teenager. Her memories are mostly happy ones, yet her sister went missing while they were there, so what REALLY happened? Of course, the huge castle and it inhabitants are very mysterious and the narrator‘s sister is not the only girl to have gone missing.

I usually like a god mystery ghost story but this one fell a little flat. It took me a very long time to read because it just didn‘t keep my interest. It seemed to drag on and felt Lot longer than it actually was. I did like the story overall but it was a struggle to get through. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mehso-so

After reading the description for this novel I found myself intrigued by the mystery surrounding the house, but sadly I was rather disappointed. The novel started out with so much promise and I found myself unable to put it down, but as it went on it seemed to fall flat. There were a lot of loose ends by the conclusion and I felt like there was too much that was left unresolved.

This was a good book, a classic is there or isn‘t there a haunting w/ plenty of other mayhem going on in the background to craft a suspenseful thriller, but I just wasn‘t feeling it. Good, but not great. It felt a touch cliché & predictable, like the author was checking off boxes on a formula list. I‘ve talked with someone who ADORED this book, so maybe I was just in a fussy mood when I read it? Barely a pick for me.

This was a fun spooky season read! Fairly predictable, but it was a perfect October read with plenty of twists and a wonderful atmosphere surrounding a creepy old castle that essentially becomes a character. The ambiguous ending was satisfying for me, leaving a little piece of the mystery intact!

I was the lucky winner of a gift certificate from my favorite antique shop and this was my first purchase, I love picking up folk art from around the area! Chicken stock is simmering in the crock pot and I'm curled up with the tagged book today. It's beginning to feel like fall 🍃🍂🍁

Curled up with my current read. It's a spooky delight! (I tried to get Charlie in this picture too but he ran away from me. 🐶) If you're on Goodreads there's a giveaway going on for this book through the end of October that you might want to check out!
