Queeries: Essays on Queer Theory and Fairy Tales
Queeries: Essays on Queer Theory and Fairy Tales | Pete Jordi Wood
4 posts | 1 read
Where are the queer fairy tales of the world? Did any ever exist, and if so, how do we find them? Join the quest as a gay author and illustrator searches for his Prince Charming In folklore collections from the past and discovers sometimes wishes really do come true...Whilst researching a Master of Arts degree at Falmouth University, Pete Jordi Wood discovered a centuries old queer fairy tale in a rare collection of folktales from the 1800's. His own variant of the tale is perhaps the first conceived in the English language. Possibly dating back to the thirteenth century, the tale is here brought back to life and told anew. It is an unusual tale-type from the oral storytelling tradition featuring a positive portrayal of a queer hero. Although there have been diverse re-imaginings of queer fairy tales, the author's variant of this story and its supported research here attempts to legitimise queer folklore's place in history. In doing so, this little book sheds light on humanity's enduring capacity for love and compassion towards the LGBTQ+ community. Identifying as an #OwnVoices writer and illustrator, the author published this essay collection, and his accompanying fairy tale, in an effort to encourage other marginalised voices in academia, in particular within the fields of illustration, creative writing, folklore, film and television studies, to share and promote one another's research and practice.

Hello #LGBTbookclub

Things have been suuuper hectic for me lately, and it's not looking like it's going to let up anytime soon, so I'm adapting our schedule a little.

Rather than having a planned discussion for May, I'm going to be asking you guys to share some of your favourite queer reads! We shall resume usual discussions for June for our latest pick, and I will be posting April's comments in due course

BookwormAHN I just finished Spell bound, and it was fantastic 11mo
PuddleJumper A series I recommend a lot because its feel good, a bit campy and a bit cheesy is the Whyborne and Griffin series by Jordan L Hawk. Steampunk, magic, gay MC, and a bunch of really great side characters. 11mo

AbigailJaneBlog @PuddleJumper @BookwormAHN I have just downloaded copies of both of these! 11mo
peanutnine @BookwormAHN I can't wait to read that, I've loved all of Lukens' other books! @PuddleJumper storygraph keeps recommending me that series, I really must check it out! 11mo
peanutnine I recently read Something Wild & Wonderful and can tell it will be a top read of the year, it was so good! Great character driven story, can't get them out of my head. It gave me the best kind of book hangover! 11mo
willaful I'm a huge fan of Red, White and Royal Blue, most books by K.J. Charles -- The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting is a recent fav -- and most books by Alexis Hall. You can tell how much I love Boyfriend Material because I've read it three times and am waiting on the audiobook. 😊 These are all really good prose stylists, with lots of witty banter. 11mo
Kenyazero One of my all-time favorite fantasy reads is Luck in the Shadows. It's a very fun read! (I would recommend Lynn Flewelling's other work too) 11mo

Hello all!

I was wondering if there's a queer book club / buddy read planned for next year? If not, would anyone be interested in my organising one? I'd ideally be looking for a range of genres & rep, rather than the same mlm romances I see plastered everywhere!

Chrissyreadit Would you like this shared on @LitsyEvents ? 1y
AbigailJaneBlog @Chrissyreadit yes please! 💕 1y
PuddleJumper There was one briefly but I haven't seen it updated for several months. @kenyazero has done a LGBTQIA bingo which I'm hoping will continue in 2023. I'd be interested in a book club or buddy read, I'm very dependent on what I can get at the library but I like finding new books to add to my TBR 😂 1y

AbigailJaneBlog @PuddleJumper thank you! If I did start one up it would be VERY chill, no commitment necessary so no worries on that front 🥰 1y
Clare-Dragonfly I‘d be interested if you do one! I can also provide suggestions for “not M/M” 😁 1y
AbigailJaneBlog @Clare-Dragonfly yes love that! I'm obviously not anti mlm just want to make sure we diversify a bit more lol 😅🥰 1y
peanutnine I'd be interested in participating if you decide to start something 😊 1y
Nelnjali If one is started, I would love a tag. I'd be very interested in joining. 1y
AbigailJaneBlog Ooohkay thanks guys! @peanutnine @Nelnjali it looks like at least 5 of us so far so I'll start making some tentative plans for the new year 💕 1y
Nelnjali @AbigailJaneBlog Awesome! I look forward to it! 1y
Kenyazero I‘d be interested! I am also pretty dependent on the library, but I have several library systems that I‘m able to pull from to find selected books! 1y
AbigailJaneBlog @Kenyazero awesome! Nice to have you on board 🌟 1y
TheBookDream I‘m interested! 1y
AbigailJaneBlog @TheBookDream fab! I'll be sure to tag you when I have something planned 🌸 1y

Pickpick

Forbes had an article about the author's discovery and retelling of a lost queer fairy tale, The Dog and the Sailor. Read it, loved it, and then bought this, a series of non-fiction essays about his journey to finding the fairy tale and the academic theory behind it. It was short but super fascinating. I'll even forgive him the use of 'irregardless' the one time.
