Where I Come from
Where I Come from: Stories from the Deep South | Rick Bragg
16 posts | 12 read | 11 to read
From the best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of All Over but the Shoutin' and The Best Cook in the World, a collection of his irresistible columns from Southern Living and Garden & Gun A collection of wide-ranging and endearingly personal columns by the celebrated author, newspaper columnist, and Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg, culled from his best-loved pieces in Southern Living and Garden & Gun. From his love of Tupperware ("My Affair with Tupperware") to the decline of country music, from the legacy of Harper Lee to the metamorphosis of the pickup truck, the best way to kill fire ants, the unbridled excess of Fat Tuesday, and why any self-respecting southern man worth his salt should carry a good knife, Where I Come From is an ode to the stories and the history of the Deep South, written with tenderness, wit, and deep affection--a book that will be treasured by fans old and new.

[The souvenir shop] was just like any place where blue-green water and glimmering asphalt were held apart by hurricane-whipped palms...I didn't believe there was another place like it on this earth. I had not yet seen this dangling participle of a state, this wonderland, and to me this was Florida, a treasure trove of Budweiser beach towels, Styrofoam floats, leaky beach balls, and bottomless bowls of pinkie rings carved from abalone shell.

There, [in Miami] I always felt that, if I ever stopped moving, a civil uprising from a conflict across the sea would just pull me into it, somehow...I don't know; maybe it was just the Cuban coffee...always felt like I was on the edge of something else, something greater and maybe just a bit dangerous, a weird and pleasant unease, if such a thing is possible...Nothing is prettier, at a distance; I've known people that way.

I‘m behind on reviews, but I listened to this NF book a couple of weeks ago. Bragg narrates, & I loved listening to his Deep South accent. This was my intro to Bragg—I didn‘t know his work until I read a book in tribute to Pat Conroy. Think this is a collection of a lot of his articles. Melancholy at times, it‘s enjoyable to hear about his family history & experience with the South.

I borrowed his book, “All Over But the Shoutin‘” from a friend years ago and loved it. The stories in this one have made me laugh out loud and get a little sentimental so far. I have quoted many lines to my husband as I‘m reading. Rick Bragg ranks up there pretty close to Pat Conroy in my book, and that‘s saying a lot. ❤️

I recommend listening to Rick Bragg‘s books instead of reading the print or ebook. He‘s got that storyteller‘s voice that drags you into his tales and makes you feel like you‘re listening to your best friend. I especially enjoyed the sections on New Orleans and its food.

Almost done!

Audio-stitching to Rick Bragg's voice was a pleasure. His stories from the South are always entertaining.

There are two authors that, when I pick up their books, I go for audio - Rick Bragg and David Sedaris. I've never been disappointed.

@Wife - you wanted to see the progress on my cross-stitch 😊

Wife Love it! ❤️ thanks for the inspiration to pick up my stitching again. 4y
Whatever101 How lovely! Someday I should complete my partially done cross stitch projects. 4y

Am I the only one who geeks out when one of your favorite authors talks about another one of your favorite authors? Had this experience today with Rick Bragg talking about Harper Lee.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bragg‘s books feel like home. Like I‘m a kid again, growing up in Kentucky, listening to my parents, grandparents, and especially my Memaw (great grandma), tell stories of their youth. I met Bragg once and we chatted over the time I lived in south Alabama. He was so kind and welcoming. It was a true pleasure. He‘s one of my absolute favorite memoirists, spinning stories with such richness and ease. I could listen to his drawl all day.

KathyWheeler He spoke at the Alabama Library Association conference a few years ago and was a lot of fun. I had read his books, but after that talk I decided to listen to My Southern Journey because he narrates it. All Rick Bragg books should be listened to — he was great. 4y
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler I still haven‘t read all his books, but I‘m working on it. 💚 I heard him speak at the Southern Festival of Books in 2018 just as The Best Cook in the World can‘t out. Such a fun experience! He‘s hilarious. I agree, he should be listened to on audio. His narration adds so much. 4y
Scochrane26 After I read the tribute book for Pat Conroy, I realized how many Southern writers I haven‘t heard of or read. Bragg is one of them—he wrote a chapter & was mentioned several times by other authors. 4y

KathyWheeler @britt_brooke I haven‘t read them all either — I think I‘ve read three. 4y
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler I think this was my fourth. 4y
britt_brooke @Scochrane26 There‘s an essay about Conroy is this collection. I love Bragg. He‘s such an amazing storyteller. I‘d recommend starting with All Over but the Shoutin‘ if/when you decide to give him a try. 💚 But I think you‘d like this collection, too. (edited) 4y
wildwoodreads He‘s from my hometown. I‘m ashamed to admit I haven‘t read any of his work yet though. 4y
britt_brooke @megzlynn Give him a try sometime! He‘s a fantastic storyteller. 💚 4y
Hooked_on_books Don‘t you mean LA (aka Lower Alabama)? 😆 I lived in Montgomery for a couple years as a kid and it cracked up my family when we heard this usage. 4y
britt_brooke @Hooked_on_books 😂 Yep! We heard that a lot. We lived way down in Enterprise/Fort Rucker twice for my husband‘s helicopter pilot training. Also heard UCLA (Ugly Corner of Lower Alabama). 😆 4y
The_Penniless_Author @britt_brooke As a lifelong Yankee, I admit I don't know much about Rick Bragg or Pat Conroy. I'm going to remedy that asap. Adding to my "to read" list. 4y
TNbookworm Rick Bragg is one of my favorites! 4y
britt_brooke @The Penniless Author I‘ve never read Conroy, but I can vouch for Bragg! He‘s such a talented, and funny, storyteller. Just his talk of southern food is enough to make you swoon. Hope you‘ll enjoy! His most well-known is All Over But the Shoutin‘. (edited) 4y
britt_brooke @TNbookworm I just love him! Did you get to see him at Southern Festival of Books, too? He was so fun. 💚 4y
TNbookworm @britt_brooke no unfortunately I was not able to go that year. I would love to see him though! 4y
britt_brooke @TNbookworm Well, bummer. He was great. Hope he comes back sometime! 4y
