[The souvenir shop] was just like any place where blue-green water and glimmering asphalt were held apart by hurricane-whipped palms...I didn't believe there was another place like it on this earth. I had not yet seen this dangling participle of a state, this wonderland, and to me this was Florida, a treasure trove of Budweiser beach towels, Styrofoam floats, leaky beach balls, and bottomless bowls of pinkie rings carved from abalone shell.
There, [in Miami] I always felt that, if I ever stopped moving, a civil uprising from a conflict across the sea would just pull me into it, somehow...I don't know; maybe it was just the Cuban coffee...always felt like I was on the edge of something else, something greater and maybe just a bit dangerous, a weird and pleasant unease, if such a thing is possible...Nothing is prettier, at a distance; I've known people that way.

pickI‘m behind on reviews, but I listened to this NF book a couple of weeks ago. Bragg narrates, & I loved listening to his Deep South accent. This was my intro to Bragg—I didn‘t know his work until I read a book in tribute to Pat Conroy. Think this is a collection of a lot of his articles. Melancholy at times, it‘s enjoyable to hear about his family history & experience with the South.
pickI borrowed his book, “All Over But the Shoutin‘” from a friend years ago and loved it. The stories in this one have made me laugh out loud and get a little sentimental so far. I have quoted many lines to my husband as I‘m reading. Rick Bragg ranks up there pretty close to Pat Conroy in my book, and that‘s saying a lot. ❤️
pickI recommend listening to Rick Bragg‘s books instead of reading the print or ebook. He‘s got that storyteller‘s voice that drags you into his tales and makes you feel like you‘re listening to your best friend. I especially enjoyed the sections on New Orleans and its food.

There are two authors that, when I pick up their books, I go for audio - Rick Bragg and David Sedaris. I've never been disappointed.

Am I the only one who geeks out when one of your favorite authors talks about another one of your favorite authors? Had this experience today with Rick Bragg talking about Harper Lee.
pick⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bragg‘s books feel like home. Like I‘m a kid again, growing up in Kentucky, listening to my parents, grandparents, and especially my Memaw (great grandma), tell stories of their youth. I met Bragg once and we chatted over the time I lived in south Alabama. He was so kind and welcoming. It was a true pleasure. He‘s one of my absolute favorite memoirists, spinning stories with such richness and ease. I could listen to his drawl all day.
