Old Records Never Die
Old Records Never Die: One Man's Quest for His Vinyl and His Past | Eric Spitznagel
10 posts | 5 read | 18 to read
Foreword by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy High Fidelity meets Killing Yourself to Live in this memoir of one man's search for his lost record collection. As he finds himself within spitting distance of middle-age, journalist Eric Spitznagel feels acutely the loss of...something. Freedom? Maybe. Coolness? Could be. The records he sold in a financial pinch? Definitely. To find out for sure, he sets out on a quest to find the original vinyl artifacts from his past. Not just copies. The exact same records: TheBonJovirecord with his first girlfriend's phone number scrawled on the front sleeve. TheKISS Alive IIhe once shared with his little brother. The ReplacementsLet It Behe's pretty sure, 20 years later, would still smell like weed. As he embarks on his hero's journey, he reminisces about the actual records, the music, and the people he listened to it with--old girlfriends, his high school pals, and, most poignantly, his father and his young son. He explores the magic of music and memory as he interweaves his adventures in record- culture with questions about our connection to our past, whether we can ever recapture it, and whether we would want to if we could.

I‘m posting one book per day from my ever-increasing TBR. No description. No explanation. Just books to read. Join the fun if you want.

Day 62.

I found another classic for my new-to-me old record player. I bought it for .49 just for Harper Valley PTA, the first song I knew as a FU song sung by woman as a child. 😂 Love the memories! And imagine my surprise when I pulled it out and put it on today and the slip cover was signed! 😁

What was the first song you realized was a bit subversive and pointed, and loved it even more once you realized it?

#LitsyPartyofOne music

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...and thinking about it now, the song is a bit before my time....so it must have been a favorite of my mom's too. 🤔 7y
Bookzombie I can't remember what song would have been my first but I love Harper Valley PTA too. Growing up my parents only listened to country music really and this was on the station they listened too often. So I love a lot of songs that were really before my time. 🙂 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookzombie My mom loved old country too, some of my earliest memories are this, Crystal Gale, Dolly Parton, etc, and whatever was top 40 at the time....so Blondie! LOL. Funny thing, neither of us really listen to current country. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookzombie Besides, good songs never die (or age). 😉 7y
Laura317 Probably "I am Woman" by Helen Reddy. It was popular when I was in elementary school. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Laura317 I got that one and listened to it today too! Apparently whoever donated the bunch to the Salvation Army had all the same tastes as us in early music! 7y

Last book I completed for the month of March at 11:58 PM. I love vinyl and stories about vinyl. Good read and a great trip down memory lane!

Fan of Questlove's memoir?! THIS is right up ur alley! Only 60 pages in and loving it. The passion with which the author describes his love for music (and his records) will make you nostalgic for all the songs that once helped you through significant times in ur life.

Maybe you find your dead dad in the Mardi Gras parade. The thing you thought was lost forever, that part of yourself that just disappeared, that vanished when you weren't paying attention, maybe you chased it down and kept running until you cornered it in a back alley and you managed to get it back

Current read: I'm loving this book! '"Are you looking for anything in particular?" she asked. - I guess the answer is I want the old thrill back, the adrenaline rush of hunting for music the way it's supposed to be hunted for.' ~Eric Spitznagel.
