During a snowy Cleveland February, newlyweds Muneer and Saeedah are starting their lives in America and expecting their first child. But Muneer harbors a secret: the word divorce has begun whispering itself in his ear. Soon, their marriage will end, and Muneer will return to Saudi Arabia, while Saeedah remains in Cleveland with their daughter, Hanadi. The more time she shares with her daughter, the more Saeedah wants to keep her close, and before long, her fear of losing Hanadi leads Saeedah to think that she and her daughter have no choice but to hide. Saeedah disappears with the little girl to build a new, secret life, while Muneer is left desperately searching for his daughter in a different country for years. The repercussions of this abduction ripple outward, not only changing the lives of Hanadi and her parents, but also their interwoven family and friends--those who must choose sides and hide their own deeply guarded secrets. And when Hanadi comes of age, she finds herself at the center of this conflict, torn between the world she grew up in and a family across the ocean. How can she exist between parents, between countries? This question lies at the heart of Eman Quotah's spellbinding debut about colliding cultures, immigration, religion, and family; an intimate portrait of loss and healing, and, ultimately, a testament to the ways we find ourselves inside love, distance, and heartbreak.

I loved this book! It was a great, emotional read that pulls at the heartstrings. I love how Eman made references to Islam.

I liked this book. Operation Desert Storm from the Saudi perspective was not something I had read about before, and Muneer was the first Arabic man I‘ve read about who believed in restrictions against women but who wasn‘t portrayed as a villain. I wish the author had gone more into the motivations of Saeedah, and the ending was a little bumpy. Overall a good read, and I hope there will be more by this author. #ReadingAsia2021

Librarybelle Sounds interesting! 3y

I went to get my bum shoulder checked out at the doctor this morning and ouch that hurt. So I called in sick this afternoon and spent the time reading in the sun with this little girl. Good medicine.

jdiehr What did you find out? I've been having shoulder pain for months. 3y
Bookwormjillk @jdiehr physical therapy 😬 3y
jdiehr @Bookwormjillk I hope it helps and you feel better soon 3y
tracey38 Sorry about your shoulder. Hope you feel better quickly. But sounds like a nice day other than the hurt. 3y

This wasn‘t what I expected - and turned out to be better. I thought this was a bit of a mystery/thriller but it was a rich, complex family saga with beautifully constructed characters. With some of the time jumps, I didn‘t really see how Saeedah turned into the character she became (same for a few pieces of Hannah‘s story) but Muneer‘s story flowed seamlessly for me.

Book 4/5 for #MarvellousMarch

LOVED this book featuring Saudi characters. Excellent themes on morality, complex personal histories and the trauma of loss. #bookreview #bookblogger #booknerd #bookstagram #bookish #2021reads

I loved the idea of this novel, but the jarring timeline & POV jumps made it difficult to follow. So much potential!!

This is a saga that spans the US and #SaudiArabia as a wife runs from her husband with her 3 yo daughter. There is a lot of trauma in the rip between father and daughter, and he never forgets her. The daughter and mother have a contentious relationship once the father re-enters the picture.

squirrelbrain Sounds a bit disappointing.... 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain yes, and I was so excited about it! Just the POV and timeline jumps were so jarring. The story was interesting though, but the telling of it didn‘t work for me. 3y

Librarybelle Bummer! I‘d be underwhelmed by a jarring timeline jump too 3y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 3y
Andrew65 I haven‘t got to Saudi Arabia yet. 3y
Megabooks @Librarybelle yeah, it was 1970 then 1989 then 1977 then 1998. Just weird. Mostly you‘d be with the daughter but sometimes it would switch to the father or mother. Also the daughter was first person and the other two were third. 🤯 3y
Megabooks @Andrew65 thanks! I wish I could recommend this book, but fortunately there are a lot set in SA. 3y
Cinfhen Ugh/ that sounds like the editor needed to do a better job!!! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I agree. And the audio didn‘t add anything. 3y

Megabooks @Cathythoughts thanks friend!! 🥰 3y
Cinfhen I hope I make it there, Meg 😩😩😩😩Rumors are abound that the airport will NOT reopen until April 1!!!!! I‘m literally FREAKING OUT!!!!!! I‘ve formally requested permission to leave the country ( which is RIDICULOUS) I‘m a dual citizen and it‘s mind boggling that I don‘t have the freedom to come & go as I please. 3y
Andrew65 Good luck 😊👍 3y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen I hope you get to travel as you've planned! It is ridiculous imo💗 3y
Cinfhen I understand why they want to limit people entering the country @Crazeedi as they are trying to lessen the spread of the new Coronavirus variants but why can‘t I fly out 🤷🏼‍♀️and I‘ve now had both doses of the vaccine, so I should be “safe” 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen oh no!!!!! I wonder if they think too many people want to travel for the holiday, especially to a place like the US where we don‘t have control of it yet?? But since you‘re Israel-based family is fully vaccinated, I don‘t see why you can‘t travel?? And the fact that they recognize your dual citizenship. Idk what to tell you friend. I‘m sorry!! I will pray about it!! 3y
Megabooks @Crazeedi like Cindy said, she is vaccinated, and a lot of countries have been successful with a short in-home quarantine for returning international travelers. I don‘t see why they can‘t just do that if they are worried?? 3y
Megabooks @Andrew65 thanks Andrew! 3y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen I understand, hope all works out for you 3y
Cinfhen Thanks, Meg & @Crazeedi i just don‘t see how this is legal / I realize they want to keep the population safe but at this point they‘ve vaccinated nearly 90% of people aged 60 and over & at least 50% of the 16 and over category have gotten the first dose and most have had both (edited) 3y

A family saga set in the States and Saudi Arabia, this one spans decades and is heartbreaking. I learned a lot about Saudi culture and enjoyed my first book written by a Saudi female author.
