Pickpick

I picked this only because it was set in the Maldives and I‘m trying to finish #ReadingAsia2021.

Happy to say it was delightful and funny. A divorced couple run into each other while on vacation with their new partners and chaos ensues. I don‘t know if I learned anything about The Maldives but I enjoyed this audiobook.

BarbaraBB Glad you had a good one to tick off Asia! 2mo

I thoroughly enjoyed this travelogue describing a Norwegian journalist‘s travels through #Turkmenistan, #Kazakhstan, #Tajikistan, #Kyrgyzstan, and #Uzbekistan. She describes some of the travel itself, basic history, political aspects, culture, and personal stories of people she met.

#nonfiction #audiobook #ReadingTheWorld #ReadTheWorld #translated

julieclair I know absolutely nothing about any of these countries. Added to my stack! (edited) 12mo
Daisey @julieclair This book has been on my TBR since I saw it posted for #ReadingAsia2021 for the same reason, but I just fairly recently found the audio and finally got to it. Definitely a worthwhile read! 12mo
BarbaraBB This was so good indeed! 12mo

jlhammar Definitely want to get to this someday as I thought Fatland's The Border was fantastic! 12mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB @jlhammar I‘ll definitely need to add her other books to my someday list. 12mo
BarbaraBB I did too. Unfortunately that day hasn‘t come yet for me 😊 but I still want to read her! 12mo

Mehso-so

So-so with the caveat that part of my issue was with the reader, and I probably would have liked this more in print.

This book features Dr. Siri, a coroner in 1970‘s Laos. The mystery wasn‘t very engaging to me, but I loved the details of Communist Laos in 1977. If I can find a print version of another book in this series I‘ll likely give it a try.

Almost done #ReadingAsia2021

CSeydel I really enjoy this series! I definitely recommend starting with book 1 because you get more introduction to the characters and Dr Siri‘s spiritual abilities. 14mo
Bookwormjillk @CSeydel thanks! Not sure how I ran across the 5th in the series, but I definitely want to find the first in print. 14mo
CSeydel The mysteries are definitely secondary to the character development and the social/political/cultural exploration, but that was particularly pronounced in ‘pogo stick,‘ I felt. I‘ve only read the first 5 so far. 14mo
Bookwormjillk @CSeydel That reminds me of Louise Penny's books which are some of my favorites. Thanks! 14mo

This little book about Sri Lanka‘s civil war packed a mighty punch. I was a little confused by the characters at first, but I went with it and this book swept me away.

Still working on #ReadingAsia2021 😃

BarbaraBB Happy to hear that! 2y

#AlphabetGame Letter G

This book had been sitting on my shelves for years. #ReadingAsia2021 was the reason I finally picked it up and how grateful I am for that. It turned out to be my favorite book of the challenge and an all time favorite. A wonderful mix of Malaysia and Japan.

Graywacke Nice! I found the cultural melange fascinating. 2y
BarbaraBB @Graywacke Me too, I loved reading about it. 2y
Centique One of the most unforgettable books I‘ve ever read 😍 2y
BarbaraBB @Centique We really have similar taste 👯‍♀️ 2y

#staycationintime @Meshell1313 @Chrissyreadit @DinoMom

I'm doing countries I've read books for, as I'm limited to 4 hour aeroplane flights.

You can definitely see the influence of #readingeurope2020 #readingasia2021 #ReadingAfrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB - where's next year's going to be? 😂😂😂😘

Bookworm54 Such a good idea! 😍 2y
BarbaraBB Such a cool world map! Next year you can fill the Americas I think, don‘t you, @Librarybelle ?! 2y
Meshell1313 Yay! I‘m so glad you like it! #readinggoals! 2y

DinoMom Love this 2y
Librarybelle So awesome, @jenniferw88 ! And, I think we will have to journey to the Americas next year, @BarbaraBB ! 2y
jenniferw88 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB sorry just realised this could be interpreted as a bit rude - I've presumed you're going to do another continent challenge next year. For all I know, you might want a break from it! (Willing to do a UK counties road trip if you ever fancy a year or 2 off from hosting!) 2y
Susanita I‘m already collecting titles for the Americas for…whenever. 😎 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve been looking at my books with an eye toward reading the Americas next year as well! Glad to know I‘m not alone! 2y
BarbaraBB Not rude at all Jennifer! Of course there‘ll be another year! After the Americas we‘ve almost finished the world and I‘d gladly do your British road trip!! @Librarybelle 2y
BarbaraBB @Susanita @Hooked_on_books So am I, happy to hear you are too! I think you‘ll be planning soon too @jenniferw88 😉?! (edited) 2y
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB Yes, but I will need clarification please on 'the Americas' as I think you've already done a trip round the United States? Will it be Central and Southern America, or will it include North as well? I confess to buying this one already as it was 99p, and can trust it will be good! @Librarybelle @Susanita @Hooked_on_books ! 🤣 2y
BarbaraBB I guess north as well but just as a country each, so Canada and the US. And I think it‘ll include the Caribbean. But @Librarybelle should agree too! 😃 2y
Librarybelle I think it‘s fair to say Canada and the US as a country each, since we did do individual states a few years ago and there was a reading Canadian provinces challenge a couple years ago too. But, each individual country in Central and South America. @BarbaraBB @jenniferw88 @Hooked_on_books @Susanita 2y
jenniferw88 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 😊😊😊 Currently working on #ukroadtrip2025 but sure I'll start planning this week! 2y
BarbaraBB 😂💯 2y

Set in the time of the Khmer Revolution, this fictional piece draws from the author‘s life. It‘s slow, poetic, and deeply sad. And brutally violent. Coming-of-age in a horrific authoritarian regime.

Librarybelle Sounds very powerful 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Librarybelle Yes, but not easy to listen to … 😥😥 3y
BarbaraBB Such a dark, dark time for Cambodia 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BarbaraBB Definitely. And very well told from a young girl‘s perspective. 3y

I love Ghosh‘s unique style of environmentally conscious fiction. If a book that‘s part travelogue, part social commentary, and part ecological history, interests you then I heartily recommend The Hungry Tide. And the Irrawaddy dolphins (see above) and Sundarban Islands are both central to the story and wholly unique.

Soubhiville Thanks for the recommendation! I‘ll definitely check it out. 3y
Addison_Reads I really enjoyed this when I read it. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Soubhiville You‘re welcome! Ghosh would make a good addition to your Author a Month too. He‘s got a big backlist and is just so good. 3y
