The Readers' Room | Antoine Laurain
9 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
'A master storyteller' Huffington Post When the manuscript of a debut crime novel arrives at a Parisian publishing house, everyone in the readers room is convinced its something special. And the committee for Frances highest literary honour, the Prix Goncourt, agrees. But when the shortlist is announced, theres a problem for editor Violaine Lepage: she has no idea of the authors identity. As the police begin to investigate a series of murders strangely reminiscent of those recounted in the book, Violaine is not the only one looking for answers. And, suffering memory blanks following an aeroplane accident, shes beginning to wonder what role she might play in the story ... Antoine Laurain, bestselling author of The Red Notebook, combines intrigue and charm in this dazzling novel of mystery, love and the power of books.

Lit myst. FRENCH Lit Myst. Thé translation seems un peu awkward in some places, so I‘m sure it will annoy me about to death, BUT I‘ve laughed twice already, so I‘m willing to see if I can learn to ignore the less than stellar prose. Probably much better in French.

My #doublespin pick for this month. There was definitely too much stuff pressed inside 100 pages in this one. And I don‘t really know why it was necessary.

Doesn't this look like a lovely story? The text on the back suggests the same. A search through Paris for a strange author. Oh, how badly I wanted to read this book!

Let's say that Laurain surely didn't write a bad book. I loved how it all comes together in the end and the insights into the work of a publishing house. BUT it is NOT the book I wanted to read. It is NOT the book the publisher makes us believe we're going to read. ⬇

Jari-chan First of all: the MC is a total stuck up and I am just glad I didn‘t spend more pages with her. Urgh. Well, at least the other characters aren‘t any better…
Next the author jumps from here to there and from this to that. Once he brings up some kind of useless Super IA and I was just like🤷‍♀️
Oh, and if you‘re out for a feel good story. Forget it. For once I say a trigger warning would‘ve been nice because I did NOT want to read about that topic ⬇

Jari-chan Maybe it‘s not the authors fault that I had such a very, very bad experience with his book, but I for sure blame the publishing house. 2y

This was an odd book that packed a lot of story into its short length. Violaine Lepage is an editor at a French publishing house. A book she edited, Sugar Flowers, is up for a prestigious literary award when murders begin happening in real life as described in the book. Violaine has no idea who the author is, and, worse, she‘s experiencing gaps in her memories. What is the truth about the murders, and who is the real author of Sugar Flowers?

Hoopla claims this is funny. We shall see. I wonder about their classifications a lot.

Not a bad mystery read - possibly the best I‘ve read with a clip art cover. I enjoyed the look inside the publishing industry but far prefer the Anthony Horowitz mysteries.

Another fun read from Antoine Laurain. This time, Laurain takes us inside the Paris publishing world and the lead-up to the Prix Goncourt. The “unknown” author of a runaway bestseller must be found, as a number of recent deaths/murders bear a striking resemblance to those described in the book. The ending leaves a lingering question; but overall, it is a clever, noir—and very French—fictional ride. #readingaroundtheworld #France

yourfavouritemixtape This sounds great! Adding to my TBR-pile asap! 🙂 4y
