Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Wilson is, on the surface, a town troublemaker, but is hiding that he is an avid reader and secret poet, never leaving home without his journal. A passionate follower of W.E.B. Du Bois, he believes that black people should rise up to claim their place as equals. Sixteen-year-old Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her familys financial situation is in turmoil. Also, as a loyal follower of Booker T. Washington, she believes, through education and tolerance, that black people should rise slowly and without forced conflict. Though theyve attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel cant turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon. But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

Set in the days leading up to and through the Tulsa Massacre, this book is beautiful and heartbreaking and infuriating. It tells the story of Isaiah Wilson and Angel Hill - he a WEB du Bois devotee, she an admirer of Booker T Washington - as they develop a friendship that turns into young love in the midst of the agonizing turmoil around them. Absolutely recommend!

a coming of age story of Isaiah and Angel, who are both trying to find who they are and what they stand for while they fall in love as well. the book leads into the night of the Tulsa Race Massacre, where Angel and Isaiah become leaders in their town to save their community, even though they‘re only teenagers. Angel is such an incredible and powerful character. this book is so well written, and the ending has me crying in public.

kera_11 I was sitting with my thoughts to fully absorb the ending and now I‘m crying again 3y
Mariasimon Adding my list! This sounds so good 3y

Teen historical fiction set in the days leading up to the Tulsa massacre. It's mostly about Angel and Isaiah figuring out who they are and getting to know each other. The massacre happens near the end of the book, so it is not the sole focus of the story. Ends on a hopeful note in spite of the tragedy.

Originally read when 1st came out and then suggested for Books and Brews Club. One of our Librarians went through the microfilm of Local Papers from that time. Not one mention of what happened in Tulsa. We live 45 min away and local paper didn't even cover the Tulsa Race Massacre. Wow.

This book was so stunning in both its beauty and its refusal to look away from this massacre.

I don't cry when I read. I don't know why. 🤷🏻‍♀️ This beautifully written book is the closest I've ever gotten to crying while I was reading.

"...the shocking death of a loved one isn't a wailing thing. The real shudder comes from the world moving on as if nothing's happened. Shops flip their Closed signs to Open, patrons gather at the theaters and soda shops, and people dare smile at things that make them happy, while those left in ruins find joy in nothing."

The writing was LOVELY. The pacing was extremely slow up until the last quarter, but that was clearly an intentional choice — you‘re meant to meander through this book, to really soak in the characters & their community, in order to fully understand the devastation of losing everything bc of horrific violence. I also loved the thought-provoking philosophical debates between the MCs, even if they did feel a bit staged. A quiet, powerful read. ★★★★☆

On May 30 1921, the African American community of Greenwood in Tulsa, OK, known as Black Wall Street, was attacked by a white mob that injured over 800 and destroyed homes, businesses, lives. The Red Cross estimates that over 1200 houses were burned. All because a young black man stumbled into a young white girl, who screamed. It was not a required topic in OK history until the year 2000. I didn't learn about it in school. This is my next read.

When I saw setting of this book I immediately wanted to read. I grew up & attended school in Oklahoma & yet knew nothing about the Tulsa Race Massacre. It's only in the last few years that I learned about it, mostly from a display at my Library.

I like how the author brought the community of Greenwood to life. Showing what was lost but also including a sweet first love story. Recommending for my Book Club.

This book will break your heart, but it will also make it grow! In the weeks leading up to the Tulsa Massacre of Black Wall Street in 1921, two teens are falling in love. Randi Pink brings Greenwood to life, and you will be devastated at the loss of such an amazing community, which was destroyed by hate and jealousy. Definitely a 5 ⭐ rec coming out in January 2021! #WinterGames #MerryReaders @Clwojick #TBRread 16pts.

A little #HolidayCraft I made yesterday to see how it would go doing it with my Memory Care residents. It turned out cute, but I think I'll use the buttons in a different art project. #WinterGames2020 #MerryReaders @Clwojick #HolidayCraft
