Emma & Persuasion | Jane Austen
post image

#Pemberlittens finished this reading Jane Austen this Summer. Missing #chapteraday readalongs. I've still more #Austenesque on my shelves.

Emily of Deep Valley is another old friend.

In honor of this line: "Other poultry-yards in the neighbourhood also suffered. — Pilfering was housebreaking to Mr. Woodhouse‘s fears." we made Rose Lemonade Collins from Drinking with Chickens. ?

SamAnne Oh, I love this. This week I'm trying to introduce two new chickens to my flock and it is going badly. I had no idea 3 of my hens were such bitches. So, under the West Coast heat dome I've been drinking a cocktail, reading my book, and knocking an asshole hen with a broom when she starts beating up on one of the new ladies. Chicken drama.... And I just love Mr. Woodhouse. Some of the best humor... 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @SamAnne OMG! Chicken Drama! 🤣 3y

I'd always seen Emma‘s father as just eccentric character but then I read this article:
https://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/20/opinion/jane-austens-guide-to-alzheimers.html... "Emma is parenting her parent and has been doing so for quite some time."

And maybe it spoke to me because I know how draining taking care of parent. But it changed my Perspective on Emma.

Crinoline_Laphroaig @I.be.Stef this is the article I referred to a few days ago. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics @4thhouseontheleft thanks for calling out the problematic parts. I think books we've read in the past we tend to remember the parts we liked best. Emma was never my favorite Austen but I always think of it fondly because of the ending. Knightley willing to give up his home because he doesn't want to make Emma‘s father unhappy. But you both made some very valid points. And it's something I will keep in mind when talking about Emma. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @sprainedbrain Thank you for being a fabulous hostess. Emma would approve. 3y

GingerAntics Emma has definitely been parenting her father her entire adult life, and I get the impression that Anne Taylor was mothering Mr. Woodhouse just as much as she was mothering Isabella and Emma when they were children. His reaction to her marrying and moving one house over essentially seems to suggest that. 3y
GingerAntics As I‘ve continued to process this book, and rewatched the miniseries, I‘m a little concerned with the abusive/dysfunctional relationships. Mr. Elton uses rape language, blaming Emma for him thinking she was interested in him (there is a paper online about that - someone‘s thesis I believe). George Knightly isn‘t the most functional character either. He infantilises Emma, but then wants to marry her. I don‘t get it. 3y
GingerAntics I did appreciate the gesture of him choosing to live at her house until her father dies. I liked the part of the miniseries where he jokes he‘ll walk back and forth a few times a day to keep up his exercise (I don‘t remember if that was in the book or not). Certainly, Emma and George both have their issues. Hopefully they can navigate some kind of healthy relationship, because their “friendship” is pretty messed up. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics and now you can say you've tried Austen and never have to read again. 😉 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig apparently I read her before… apparently I took an antihero class that read Emma. I can‘t remember if that was the week I was out of class for a family funeral or what, but I don‘t even remember having a conversation about Emma. 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig I even went into my Amazon account and checked. Sure enough, I bought a copy of Emma in January of 2016. I get why they make us read a book a week per class (I think), but you don‘t remember ANY of it after it‘s over. It‘s just a mad dash to get everything in your head long enough to participate in the discussion. I even asked a friend if she remembered it. She hated it, apparently. 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig I‘m not going to lie… I‘ve heard suggestions that I might like other books by her more. I don‘t know why, but I‘m tempted. 3y
i.besteph @Crinoline_Laphroaig I just got to reading it. What a beautiful perspective! I was moved by the article. It depicts Emma in a whole new light. I‘m not sure if Austen intended to show Emma that way but I like the novel even more now. Thanks for tagging me! (edited) 3y
i.besteph PS the link isn‘t clickable. I googled it and found it. Maybe you need to click enter for it to be highlighted? It may be easy to click it from the post then. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics Pride and Prejudice will always be my favorite, I am looking forward to Persuasion in August. I read it as a teenager and was 'Meh' but I reread a few years ago and my older eyes enjoyed it. I'm curious to see what group thinks. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @I.be.Stef your welcome! If anyone else has trouble with link just Google the title Jane Austen's Guide to Alzheimer‘s and it pops up. 3y
Lcsmcat This is a great article. Thanks for sharing! I never thought about Alzheimer‘s specifically, but Emma‘s care giving of her father always impressed in me that she wasn‘t selfish. This gives it that much more weight. 3y

"But, in spite of these deficiencies, the wishes, the hopes, the confidence, the predictions of the small band of true friends who witnessed the ceremony, were fully answered in the perfect happiness of the union."

And with that last line it's time to put Emma back on the shelf. I have some thoughts about #emmaeveryday I'll be posting later.

If a single man ever read this book, it‘s no wonder why generations of men believe that women do nothing but prattle on about useless nonsense. The ending was wholly unbelievable. Out of nowhere Emma suddenly has the capacity to love a man (or anything other than the sound of her own voice)? There is nothing to like here. Pretentious, self important language. Classism from beginning to end with a smattering of racism to top it off.

GingerAntics An utter lack of plot. Pass. The BBC miniseries was better. I can officially say, yes I have read Austen, and I‘m not a fan. #JaneAusten #Emma #pemberlittens #emmaeveryday @sprainedbrain 3y

This week's Farm Flowers looked lovely with this Edition of Emma.

As for Chapter this is where I fall even deeper in love with Knightley: "Such a partner in all those duties and cares to which time must be giving increase of melancholy!" Willing to give up his house for Mr W's sake. ?

This popped up in my Facebook On this Day. Every year I celebrate my Birthday for as many Days as I'm years old. Not about big parties and spending money although I do spend money. Hey it's my Birthday. But more importantly it's taking time every day to enjoy life's little moments. #Pemberlittens are definitely a part of that. I didn't realize we've been at this over a year. It's been a delight. 📚

Crinoline_Laphroaig As for today's Chapter - Frank Churchill gets off way to easy. I hope Jane Fairfax gets even. See my previous post. 3y
sprainedbrain It‘s wild that we‘ve been at this so long! We are getting so close to the end. 😬 3y

Did anyone else find the added nosebleed scene weird or was that just me #Pemberlittens @sprainedbrain ❓? ?‍♀️

"Bear with the truths I would tell you now, dearest Emma, as well as you have borne with them." #emmaeveryday

sprainedbrain I think many people hated that. I‘ve seen it discussed a lot in JA groups. I think that whole scene is adorable, nosebleed included. 😅 3y
rubyslippersreads I haven‘t watched yet, but I‘m not a big fan of bodily functions on the silver screen. 😏 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @rubyslippersreads I'm with you on that. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @sprainedbrain was totally not expecting so it kind of shocked me. We'll see how we feel on 2nd viewing. 3y
Andrea313 Not just you! That moment totally threw me and I still can't quite reconcile it, even after reading interviews with the director on why she included it. I will also be giving this version a second viewing next month and am curious to see how I'll feel this time around. 3y

Mr Weston once again proving me right that men just as big of gossip's as women. Or probably more.

"Oh! — you need not be afraid of owning it to me, for Mr. Weston has told me himself. I met him just now. He told me it was to be a great secret; and, therefore, I should not think of mentioning it to any body but you, but he said you knew it.” ? @sprainedbrain
