Goblin
Goblin: A Novel in Six Novellas | Josh Malerman
11 posts | 13 read | 12 to read
From the bestselling author of Bird Box, a novella collection in which every story reveals a sinister secret about a mysterious small town. The town of Goblin seems like any other ordinary small town. But with the master storyteller Josh Malerman as your tour guide, you'll discover the secrets that hide behind the town's closed doors. These six novellas tell the story of a place where the rain is always falling, nighttime is always near, and your darkest fears and desires await. Welcome to Goblin... A Man in Slices: A man proves his "legendary love" to his girlfriend with a sacrifice even more daring than Vincent van Gogh's--and sends her more than his heart. Kamp: Walter Kamp is afraid of everything, but most of all he is afraid of ghosts. As he sets traps around his home to catch the ghosts that haunt him, he learns that nothing is more terrifying than fear itself. Happy Birthday, Hunter: A famed big game hunter is determined to capture--and kill--the ultimate prey: the mythic Great Owl who lives in Goblin's dark forests. But this mysterious creature is not the only secret the woods are keeping. Presto: All Peter wants is to be like his hero, Roman Emperor, the greatest magician in the world. When the famous magician comes to Goblin, Peter discovers that not all magic is just an illusion. A Mix-Up at the Zoo: The new zookeeper feels a mysterious kinship with the animals in his care... and finds that his work is freeing dark forces inside him. The Hedges: When his wife dies, a man builds a hedge maze so elaborate no one ever solves it--until a little girl resolves to be the first to find the mysteries that wait at its heart.

3✨ A book of novellas about one place. This location called Goblin is all sorts of dark and twisty. We have different POV for each novella and some were more engaging than others. I was hoping for I little bit more from this, but not all the story stories disappointed me.

Landing solidly in the middle on this one. The majority of the stories would have been so much better if they were shorter. This was an insanely verbose book. Plus I was definitely not a fan of the end it was just meh. My favorite story in here was the magician. Again it could have been shorter but the ending to that story actually gave me chills.

I couldn't get my hands on Bird Box so I thought this sounded interesting for a fall read last year.

Great concept. Great writting. But doesn't ever go anywhere. It was such a let down. I mean there are some amazing ideas in here. AMAZING. Which made it that much worse when nothing really happens.

BookDragonNotWorm I've found I either love or hate his books with no middle ground. They're either great or bad. 2y
Buchbeeg @BookDragonNotWorm It's the only one I've read though I loved his writing so much I for sure want to read more. Do you suggest anything in particular? 2y
BookDragonNotWorm I LOVED Bird Box and Malorie was pretty good, but I DNRed Daphne - twice 😬, and only finished House At The Bottom Of The Lake because it was so short. 2y
Buchbeeg @BookDragonNotWorm Well I got a copy of Bird Box at my last book sale so I'll give that one a go! Thanks for the suggestions! Sounds like I'll skip Daphne lol 2y
BookDragonNotWorm Please don't pass on it just because of my opinion - TBH if I had read the blurb first, I might have passed, but I was pre-approved for the ARC, & since I've really liked some of his books, I downloaded it. My main issues with it were:1. I didn't like the way he wrote his teenage girl characters (which was what this book centered on - I'm a fan of YA, but some men just write them 🦨) & 2. too much basketball - hard pass 2y

Trying to psych myself out of a reading slump by perusing the library shelves… will one of these do the trick?

ShyBookOwl I really enjoyed that Harrow book. Plus it's short, which I always find helpful when I'm struggling through a slump 😊 2y
TheKidUpstairs I second Spindle, it was a lot of fun. 2y
Ruthiella Spindle! Because I want to read it too. 2y
Chrissyreadit Your shelves are so much fun! 2y

Kimbono @Bianca 😍 One of my favorite thing to do is pair up music and books. Most of the time the pairings make no sense to anyone but me. 🤣 3y

I loved this collection of six novellas, all revolving around the inhabitants of a strange little town called Goblin. Everything in the book is just delightfully weird. I also felt the short stories were very well done; they reminded me, skill-wise, of Stephen King‘s old school and excellent short story collection Night Shift. Each story left me wanting more. #netgalley #arc Photo credit to my daughter #petoskey #puremichigan #upnorth

Interesting concept, but not the strongest execution from this author.

The story of the small town of Goblin, and all the supernatural/scary things that go on there, is told through 6 separate stories that I wish had connected more. Without the cohesiveness between the stories I felt unsatisfied with the story, wanting more explanation.

I did love the idea behind this though, so that's why it's a so-so and not a pan. #netgalley

vivastory That's disappointing, I was really looking forward to this one 3y

I have mixed feelings about this book. I felt it was very well written, which encouraged me to keep reading. At the same time, parts of it were very boring. I didn't like the long, introspective passages. I wanted more action. I wanted more horror. There was definitely some creepy stuff here, but not enough. The town of Goblin sounded very interesting, but the people were just kind of meh. My favorite story was the prologue/epilogue.
