Calla North and her mother Elizabeth live a quiet but happy life together. Elizabeth happens to be the world's leading expert on ducksbut unfortunately, being an expert on ducks doesn't always pay the bills (no pun intended). When Elizabeth is offered a well-paid research trip to the Amazon, it's an opportunity too good to miss. But while her mothers off exploring, Calla winds up at boarding school. No adventures are likely to find her thereor so she thinks. Then Calla receives the terrible news that her mother's plane has gone missing. Can Calla, her friends, and a motley crew of nuns defeat an evil new headmistress and find Elizabeth before its too late?

This was delightful❤️ Calla and her mom Elizabeth have a tight bond, that will be tested when Mom‘s offered a 6-month job in the Amazon to search for a rare duck, while Calla is at boarding school. Then Mom goes missing — clever story with a few twists!

I‘ve been spending a bit of my Sunday afternoon with this recommendation from @rubyslippersreads .

With lots of secret nods towards vintage girl‘s school fiction (a love of mine!), I‘m finding this middle grade boarding school tale quite quirky and delightful.

erzascarletbookgasm Sounds like a fun adventure! Pretty cover too 💙 2y
Cathythoughts I love the drawing of the girl 💕👍 2y

quietjenn Ah, that's awesome! And the book sounds fun, too! 🤗 3y
rubyslippersreads @quietjenn It‘s very fun, plus it made me order some Chalet School books. 😊 3y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Ooo, it talks about Chalet School books?? And which ones did you order? 3y
batsy Nice! And I, too, have learned a new word 😁🦆 3y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen Yes, the author is an expert on them (and “girls own” books in general). On her recommendation, I ordered Chalet School in Exile. And then The School at the Chalet, The New House at the Chalet School, and Chalet School Reunion (chosen solely for the cover). All GGBP editions, so I‘ve pretty much blown through my 2021 book budget. 🤣 3y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen Which ones would you recommend? 3y
LeahBergen Haha! How wonderful! Well, I would definitely save Reunion until last as characters from the early books are (gasp!) adults in it. I‘d probably go ahead with The School at the Chalet just because it‘s the first one. I read a few as a kid (out of order and as I could find them) but I‘m collecting and reading them in order now. I think I‘m up to book 6 or 7 now? Exile is supposed to be one of the best. And if you find an old edition with the 👇 3y
LeahBergen Nazi on the dust jacket... buy it immediately! It‘s worth thousands. 😆 3y
LeahBergen And it looks as though I need to stack this book and buy it when it comes out! I think I prefer the UK cover. 🤔 3y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen The GGBP edition has that cover (though I‘ll keep my eye out once we can go to bookstore/thrift shops again). (edited) 3y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen I‘m going to buy the UK version when it comes out. I think the footnotes will be even more fun in a “real” book vs. the PDF ARC I read. 3y
LeahBergen Footnotes, too??? 😍😍😍 3y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen That‘s why I put a footnote in my review. 😊 3y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen I already have an old thrift-shop paperback of 3y
