Bought it in ‘21,lost in TBR pile. Mick Hardin with Army CID is back where he grew up, small town eastern Kentucky. He knows his marriage is in trouble, he‘s not sure why.His sister is the new sheriff, she‘s not getting a lot of support. When a woman is found murdered in a holler, old family feuds & grudges bubble to the surface. Mick is not sure what he‘s in for. Beautiful writing about the natural world, the author has turned this into a series.
'No, they sold [the prison] for three million dollars. The college is going to open a branch here.'
Mick nodded. It was about like the state to start a school in a building with no windows, no grounds, and no private bathrooms. One of the local mandates was to educate ex-cons but he couldn't imagine anybody wanting to take classes in the same building where they'd served time.
Yassss! Loved this grit lit mystery so hard. Chris Offutt absolutely nails the people of Appalachia (yup, I‘m born and raised) and presents his characters with empathy. The plot was engaging and well-paced. #ARC #Netgalley
