This was my third Alameddine and I loved it. I feel like one of the biggest challenges for the 21st century is going to be the increasing number of refugees, especially as the climate crisis worsens. This novel offers no solutions but was a powerful hands-on portrayal of the Syrian crisis in Greece and humanity at its worst and best, and also with occasional humor.

Leftcoastzen Sounds good. I don‘t get why more people aren‘t figuring this out.Great Review. 2y

The story follows Dr. Mina and her friends as they help at a Syrian refugee camp in Lesbos. As Dr. Mina recounts the events through letters to a writer friend, she takes you on her journey of immigration and self discovery between reliving the struggles seen within the camp. I found myself doing research on the very real events that are referenced in this book. I am frustrated by the EU‘s and the US‘s response to the violence. A powerful read.

jlhammar I‘ve been meaning to try this one. I loved An Unnecessary Woman. 2y
Zuhkeeyah @jlhammar I will add that to my TBR. I want to read more by this author. 2y

Mina, a Lebanese trans woman physician, travels to Lesbos to assist with a flood of refugees fleeing violence in Syria. Though Mina's life is relatively stable now, she recognizes from personal experience the themes of being rejected from one's home, of crossing borders and searching for refuge. Mina bonds with a family whose matriarch has had to make impossible decisions, and still has to make more. Brilliant, difficult, nuanced, recommended.

1.Very much so! Specially when I'm at work and waiting for some file to upload!
2. My trusty Kindle. I absolutely love it, the interface, the ease of use, how easy it is on the eyes- absolutely everything. I als use my old but still reliable Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to read protected epubs from libraries

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! Have a great day! 💙📖 3y

This. Book. A doctor volunteers at the Moria refugee cam on the island of Lesbos and takes an interest in one Syrian family coming through. The writing and story are absolutely fabulous. I will be recommending this one to everyone. #ARC #Netgalley
