Passenger 23: a twisted and terrifying thriller | Sebastian Fitzek
12 posts | 23 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
Every year, on average 23 people disappear without a trace from cruise ships, presumed suicides or tragic accidents. No one has ever come back. Until now. Five years ago police psychologist Martin Schwartz lost his wife and son. They were holidaying on a cruise ship when they simply vanished. A lacklustre investigation was unable to shed any light on what happened murder-suicide was the coroner's verdict. It is a verdict that has haunted Martin ever since, blighting his life. But now he has been contacted by an elderly woman, a writer, who claims to have information regarding their fate and wants him to come on board the Sultan of the Seas immediately. She explains that his wife and son are not the only mother-and-child pair to have disappeared. Only a few months ago another mother and daughter also vanished. It appears there may be a serial killer on board. But when the missing daughter reappears carrying Martin's son's beloved teddy bear it becomes apparent that the truth could be much, much worse...

Great premise - passengers disappearing from a cruise ship - and interesting twists. But the writing was a little crass for my taste, I was confused by the number of characters and the ending seemed unrealistic. Then the epilogue was completely over the top. It seemed to have a sexist tone too.

BarbaraBB That‘s clear. I won‘t try. Despite the attractive cover! 4y
julesG @BarbaraBB Don't bother. German author, gets lots of praise here. But I think it's overrated. Woe be on me if I said that in front of my friends, who are all hardcore fans (but only read 5-10 books a year). 4y
BarbaraBB @julesG Haha! I know what you mean. I mostly stay far from hyped Dutch books too! 4y

Abailliekaras @julesG @BarbaraBB I think he achieves what he sets out to do (with interesting hook) but it wasn‘t to my taste. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘m looking for a good crime if you have any recs? 4y
julesG I liked the first few books in Mo Hayder's series 4y
julesG Really good fictional crime is difficult for me. In most cases I have figured out who did it and why long before the end of the book. Then the writing or the characters need to be interesting enough to carry me to the end. 4y
julesG @BarbaraBB Oh. That's on my TBR, too. 4y
Abailliekaras @julesG thank you! 4y
Abailliekaras @BarbaraBB I didn‘t get on with it. 😬 4y
BarbaraBB Really? That‘s a bummer, it was finally a thriller I liked again after many not so surprising or mediocre ones. Which would you recommend? 4y
Abailliekaras @BarbaraBB I‘m looking for recommendations! Girl 11 was excellent. 4y
BarbaraBB Thanks! Have you read 4y
Abailliekaras @BarbaraBB no but it sounds great! 4y
BarbaraBB That‘s a real page turner. 4y

Done!!!

One of my favourite German authors - his books are always full of surprises and plot twist. You never know how it will end. This book left me speechless and I finished it within one sitting

MrBook You talked me into it. 8y
