This one centers on the murder of Rachel, a once-Amish woman, at a motel in Painters Mill. Chief of Police Kate knew Rachel from her Amish past. There are plenty of surprises to enjoy, but I also love the relationship between Kate and her lover, Thomas Eddy, an FBI state agent for Ohio.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This is far outside of what I usually read, and I have not read the first 12 books in this series, but it was chosen for my book club & I was interested in trying something new.
There are definitely things I didn‘t love, writing style choices that weren‘t as smooth, etc.
But overall this absolutely delivers on what it is: a police procedural murder mystery set in Amish country.
Would I read more in this series? Honestly, yeah I would.

This is #13 in the Chief Kate Burkholder series set in Ohio‘s Amish country but the first I‘ve read. It was fairly decent for a formulaic mystery series but I‘m sure if I‘d started with #1 I would have never made it to this one.

The latest book in the Kate Burkholder series was a solid but not brilliant addition. As always, Castillo treats the Amish community with dignity yet portrays them realistically - as humans following their specific beliefs and traditions but who still have human weaknesses like anyone else. I really love Kate's character & Castillo has developed her so well throughout this series, letting Kate face her past & grow as an individual. I also have⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) a huge soft spot for Kate's boyfriend & was glad to see him again in this story. I found that the ending stretched my credulity a bit so it's honestly a soft pick, but on the whole this series is quite excellent, although they will definitely make more sense if read in order - this is book 13.

Happy #PublicationDay to this 13th installment in Linda Castillo‘s Kate Burkholder series! I‘ve been following this one from the very start and am always thrilled to get my hands on the latest! It opens with the brutal murder of a young woman, who like Kate, left the Amish faith. But her return to Painter‘s Mill turns lethal… Some readers may guess at the plot‘s twists but this will keep you turning pages for sure! I can‘t wait to see what‘s next!

Book 13 in the series. Rachel Swartz leaves the Plain life but takes secrets with her. Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder is shocked when she finds that Rachel has been brutally murdered. She is told that Rachel has many enemies. When long buried secrets resurface, Kate must find the murderer before he strikes again. I love this series. Castillo is a great writer and storyteller.

EadieB The book has twists and turns I didn't see coming and the ending is a complete surprise. Can be a standalone but should start at book 1 in order to get all the background on the characters. Looking forward to book 14. Thanks to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for a free copy for an honest review. 3y
EadieB Thanks to MacMillian audio for a copy of the audio of this book. Kathleeen McInerney is a great narrator and she is the voice of Kate Burkholder. I love reading along with the audio. It makes for a great experience.. I also loved hearing from the author at the end of the audio. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I love this series!! Excited about the newest addition. 3y
