⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for my June #BookSpin selection. Henderson shares her journey growing up raised by her grandmother in Monroe, NY. A tough read at times…laugh out loud at others.

A friend lent me this book and I absolutely loved it. I chose this photo of the author because it kind of sums up the relationship that this story is about. This book was heart breaking at times but also hilarious. Dani‘s grandmother was a scary but strong, loving woman who would do anything for her grandkids. The word ‘fuck‘ seems to have been one of her favorite words. This story is about the crazy but loving relationship Dani had with her.

JenniferEgnor One of my favorite parts was the part about Spiderweb City. 2y

I don‘t think I have ever read a book with a more descriptive title. If you don‘t ugly cry at least once reading this…you are a monster. I think my favorite part is this takes place in Orange County, NY where I lived for a short time.

This is an excellently narrated audiobook of a childhood with upsetting details, but still manages to be full of humor. The author recounts her early life with her mother and brother and the struggles they went through. But the book is ultimately a love letter to her grandmother who had a huge impact on her life. Actually reminded me a bit of Hillbilly Elegy with the similar grandmothers, but without the bad politics 😆

Megabooks I found this one to be really sad in the first half. It was really well written though. 3y
Chelsea.Poole @Megabooks agreed, sad..it got to me as well. I‘m a weepy mess these days! Spoiler: her mother‘s abandonment is just horrible. 3y

An inspiring memoir that reminds the reader that great things can be accomplished despite the most dire of circumstances.

I found several passages really difficult to listen to.

The author narrates the audiobook which was a plus.

PS - super fun puzzle 😀

Megabooks Agree. Very good book but parts were heartbreaking. 3y

Danielle & I have something in common: We both process pain with humor. That said, sometimes it‘s hard to be able to laugh with someone about their trauma, which is how I felt about the first half of this memoir. It‘s one of those frustrating situations where the mom‘s boyfriend is abusive to everyone, but she won‘t leave. In the second half, when Danielle was safe with her grandma, it was easier to laugh at their more mundane family issues. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ It‘s still a pick for being so well written, but definitely a content warning! At times in the first half, I was just so sad that I couldn‘t laugh with her. #audiobook (edited) 3y
Cinfhen I know what you mean about laughter and pain. Great review 3y

At first, I felt horrible for cackling out loud at this lady‘s terrible family and way of upbringing but the way she puts it you can‘t help but laugh.
She was raised by her grandparents that were really done with raising kids. Her grandmother was an eye-rolling, foul-mouthed, loving yet uncompromising kind of person that reminded me of being raised and loved my Archie Bunker. 🥴
