Weve been stuck at home for long enough! Its time to get out and taste the world again. From those ever-curious, ever-quirky minds behind the #1 New York Times bestselling Atlas Obscura, with over 800,00 copies in print, comes an unputdownable guide that marries our endless appetite for travel with our insatiable interest in food. Continent by continent, country by country, Gastro Obscura takes up the mantle of Atlas Obscura to radically expand our sense of wonder about the worldin this case, what humans eat and drink, which turns out to be far more marvelous than we could ever imagine. Created by the founders of AtlasObscura.com, GastroObscura.com delivers fresh food stories daily to the millions of Atlas Obscura readers and Facebook fans, along with its own burgeoning dedicated email newsletter that is currently reaching over 192,000. And it is now serving up the best of it in a lavishly illustrated food-lovers gift of nearly 500 dishes, ingredients, traditions, and experiences. Discover English bog butter. Threads of God pasta (only three women know how to make it). The best black bean fritter restaurant in Brazil. The worlds largest floating restaurant. A croissant museum in Poland. Focusing as much on foods place in our lives as well as our bellies, the book covers historythe network of ancient Roman fish sauce factories. Culturepicture four million women gathering to make rice pudding. Travelscale China's Mount Hua to reach a sacred tea house. Festivalschase a wheel of double Gloucester at Britains annual Coopers Hill cheese rolling competition. I read this fascinating food book very slowly and thoroughly enjoyed it! It takes you around the world of food, from mouth-watering to nauseating to “why would anyone eat that?!?” in short entries full of fun facts. I loved it!

35/150 This book is a rollercoaster ride. One minute the authors are describing delicious mouthwatering food, the next they're talking about eating, IMO, the vilest, most disgusting things any human could eat. It is a testament to human ingenuity and resourcefulness. If there's a plant or animal in existence, we'll find a way to make a meal of it.

I don't plan to read my books to counter point each other, but sometimes they just fall that way. Gastro Obscura illustrates that we (mankind) will eat ANYTHING, every part of every animal and plant on the Planet. So it argues there is much biodiversity in human diets. Eating to Extinction argues the counter point, that human diets have become homogenized to the point where there are few choices.

RamsFan1963 While some of the options presented in Gastro are gross, by my standards, it shows the amazing ingenuity and resourcefulness of the human race. 2y

Eating may be the most immersive, visceral traveling experience.

The latest installment in the delightful Atlas Obscura series is this international guide to culinary customs & food adventures. Kyle Maclachlan couldn't have praised it higher when he said, ““Thumbing through this exquisite guide kept me at the breakfast #table until dinner time.“ The Atlas Obscura book is one of my fave coffee table books & I look forward to getting this volume. #GratefulHarvest @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Eggs

As someone who plans what/where she‘s going to eat as a priority when planning any trip, this seemed like just my cup of tea. It is a great gift for the adventurous foodie, with a penchant for the weird and wonderful, and an interest in bizarre historical tidbits, and to have sitting on the coffee table, to dip into, and read the quirkiest bits aloud to anyone in earshot! My only disappointment was that the photography and design felt a bit dated.

BarbaraBB Sounds right up my alley too! 3y
Lauram I love making food plans! 3y
