The Natural Mother of the Child
The Natural Mother of the Child: A Memoir of Nonbinary Parenthood | Krys Malcolm Belc
8 posts | 10 read | 11 to read
"Essentially this book is a heavily visual memoir-in-essays that explores how the experience of gestational parenthood-conceiving, birthing, and breastfeeding my son Samson-eventually clarified my gender identity and allowed me to project a different more masculine self. Ruminating on how the experiences contained under the umbrella of "motherhood" don't fully describe my experience amplifies the outsiderness the speaker, who is almost always addressing a cis "you," sometimes his mother, sometimes strangers, mostly his cis female partner. Instead of using a straight narrative, the book circles around this concept of motherhood and of my relationship to it. The book is also an archive of my queerness, of childhood photos of me smiling impossibly wide, of my original birth certificate and the legal documents surrounding Samson's adoption. It's a direct engagement with the documentation we think constitutes a record of one's life. The book ends on an exploration of how much we can really know when we enter into parenting a person, and of my ambivalence about the "before" and "after" that is so prevalent in trans stories and that feels so outside my experience as a nonbinary transmasculine person"--

Krys‘s experience as a non-binary parent felt like a celebration of non-traditional families. I loved hearing the audio read in his words. The stories of little Samuel‘s fashion sense and expressive nature made me grin ear to ear. Yay for making your own way in the world! 🏳️‍🌈

(Couldn‘t resist sharing sleepy tongue-poking-out Igor. He really is the cutest.)

AlaMich Just curious about hairless cats…do they always burrow into blankets like in the photo? 2y
Soubhiville @AlaMich mine most of the time want to be either in a sunny spot or at least partly under a blanket. I like my house warm, AC is set to 79 during the day, and they still heat seek. If you look back over my feed you‘ll see lots of pictures of both my boys, almost always with a fleece blanket. 2y

Hooked_on_books This is a good one. I‘m so glad there are books like this in the world. We need to shatter traditional thought about gender norms, and this helps. 2y

Spent a lot of my day off today reading this powerful memoir-in-essays about the author's journey through transitioning and what presenting as a man but being the "natural mother" of his son has been like. The timeline of some of the essays can be a bit disjointed but the writing style is lovely and the addition of photos and scans of documents make for a great reading experience.

Krys went through a pregnancy while presenting as a man during his transition. Here, he reflects upon the realities of being a pregnant trans man, being required to adopt one‘s spouse‘s children (even though they were born during the marriage), and being addressed as his son‘s mother. It is both a window into his life and a potent message about how inadequate our language and societal “norms” can be. Really thought provoking.

A very unique look at pregnancy and parenting through the eyes of a nonbinary/trans masculine person. Exploring what it means to be a non-female going through experiences that society puts in an exclusively female category. Good writing. Fascinating insights.

I‘ve been meaning to read so many books for #pride but keep getting waylaid by library holds! June is slipping out of my grasp, so I finally just pushed all others aside for this one on #hoopla. A short #memoir which was both very different/eye opening and felt so relatable in the descriptions of motherhood for me. Such an interesting concept, which made a lovely #audiobook narrated by the author which is always welcome!

Megabooks I have borrows remaining and just checked this out! Thanks! (I may even listen tonight 😉) 3y
Chelsea.Poole @Megabooks hope you enjoy! It‘s super quick 👯‍♀️ 3y
Cathythoughts Sounds really good & yes , narrated by the author is the best IMO 3y

This memoir by Krys Malcolm Beck is a fabulous read for pride month. After a long spell of finding memoir (usually a favorite genre) underwhelming, this debut pulled me out of the rut. #Netgalley #ARC

I have been looking forward to this debut memoir so so much. From the inside cover: “Krys Malcolm Belc has thought a lot about the interplay between parenthood and gender. As a nonbinary, transmasculine parent, giving birth to his son Samson clarified his gender identity. And yet, when his partner, Anna, adopted Samson, the legal documents listed Belc as “the natural mother of the child.” “

If you‘re looking for a pride month read, stack it!
