I usually really enjoy armchair hiking books and this one about setting the fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail was no exception. It was surprising that Anderson could complete such a goal while doubting herself the entire time. Just goes to show!

intothehallofbooks I‘m so glad you posted about this! I enjoy this type of books too. I‘ll have to keep my eyes open for this one. • A few years ago I read Becoming Odyssa by Jennifer Pharr Davis and I think Davis had also set a record for fastest time on the A.T. several years ago. Have you read it? 8mo

1. This is a tough question when you primarily read murder books and dystopians 😂 so I went with the tagged book that‘s set on the Appalachian Trail. It‘s on my bucket list.

2. Having time off with my dude for his bday! 🥳

Thanks for the tag @DarkMina

This ended up being very good. The author really delves into her psyche and conquers her self doubt. She let her identity as a hiker really take over her full being and had to get to the root of why she started and dig deep -between bear encounters, bouts of horrid weather, meeting friendly and not so friendly locals, and eating a huge quantity of power bars, of course. Really inspiring.

Author‘s internal self talk is still negative & off putting (if you‘re a slouch for ONLY hiking 40 miles a day, your intended audience is very limited). I related to a part though where she is struggling and thinking “how did I hike AT in worse physical shape with completely inappropriate gear” and I‘ve had that experience with trail races. The first time you get by on the hope conditions will improve. The 2nd time, you know they won‘t haha

Started this. The author was the first woman to hike a Triple Crown in a calendar year, made the fastest known time (overall) on the PCT, came in 4th in a 100 mile race. The book starts off with these very negative diatribes about her athletic career and DNFs after the PCT that lead to her setting her sights on beating the Appalachian Trail self supported record. Kind of extreme. I day dream about thru hiking but I don‘t want to sleep outside.
