A shocking murder carries echoes of the past for a psychologist in a startling novel of suspense by a Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author. Psychologist and criminologist Dr. Gretchen White is a specialist in antisocial personality disorders and violent crimes. She's helped solve enough prominent cases for detective Patrick Shaughnessy that her own history is often overlooked: Gretchen is an admitted sociopath once suspected of killing her aunt. Shaughnessy still thinks Gretchen got away with murder. It's not going to happen again. When a high-profile new case lands on Shaughnessy's desk, it seems open and shut. Remorseless teenager Viola Kent is accused of killing her mother. Amid stories of childhood horrors and Viola's cruel manipulations, the bad seed has already been found guilty by a rapt public. But Gretchen might be seeing something in Viola no one else does: herself. If Viola is a scapegoat, then who really did it? And what are they hiding? To find the truth, Gretchen must enter a void that is not only dark and cold-blooded, but also frighteningly familiar.

This book had more twists and up and downs than a roller coaster. Whatever I thought was what had happened, was wrong. This was an amazing thriller read!

Between paper and audio it‘s been a productive reading month so far. Liked the tagged about a nonviolent psychopath helping the police with a case involving a young violent sociopath. Wasn‘t perfect, and had a couple spots that seemed a bit off, but overall the story was interesting enough to keep me reading and wondering how Labuskes would wrap things up. Use of multiple perspectives, and going from past to present events, kept things moving.

Q84 @Allylu awe thanks. I must admit I wouldn't be able to get through them without audiobooks and text to voice and the fact that I can listen while I work and drive. 3y

This was a refreshing new way to look at a psychological thriller. Gretchen a sociopath helps out on murder cases, the detective found her because she was a suspect in a case of his, he couldn't prove her guilty so he started using her as a consultant. There is two POV'S and the blend together effortlessly. Really enjoyed this one. #BookSpinBingo #Bingo @TheAromaofBooks
