It's a peaceful, if solitary profession...until the day when he's called to the river to examine the latest in a series of mysterious bodies, mangled by some unknown force.Galen is a paladin of a dead god, lost to holiness and no longer entirely sane. He has long since given up on any hope of love. But when the two men and a brave gnole constable are drawn into the web of the mysterious killer, it's Galen's job to protect Piper from the traps that await them. He's just not sure if he can protect Piper from the most dangerous threat of all...

Absolutely love this series❤️❤️❤️ Galen and Piper were just perfection and love the gnole characters in all the books. Can‘t wait to read the next one.

sebrittainclark I think about the ending of this one all the time. I love it so much. 4mo

When paladin Galen, litch doctor Piper, and gnole constable Earstrap investigate mangled bodies that are washing up out of the river, they discover a plot to activate the mythical wonder engines.
I adored the interactions between the three main characters and the chemistry between Galen and Piper was adorable.

I was conflicted the first time I read this. I wanted to love it, but didn't.

The 1st issue is we didn't learn anything about the Wonder Engines, so the whole underlying plot was unfulfilling. The 2nd problem is I didn't believe all Galen & Piper's actions. Galen not telling Piper about his sleep issues? No. And the resolution to their relationship problems? I felt offended on Piper's behalf.

Which is too bad, because LIKE Piper & Galen

Finished the last of this fantastic trilogy. This one has a completely different premise from the first two but features previous characters. I was so happy to finally get a story for Galen! The banter between him and Piper was so great. Honestly this one was way more character-driven than the last two but I really enjoyed it.

I love this series. Lots of action and adventure along with a touch of romance. And this particular installment has LGBTQ representation as the main characters.

I adore this romantic fantasy series. It features a clan of paladin‘s that have fought brutal battles and deal with ptsd while trying to defend the innocent. Each book is a standalone, but I do recommend reading in order. This is book 3 featuring one of said paladins who teams up with a “bone doctor” (think pathologist) and a fantastical being to solve a mystery. 5⭐️

5/5

Piper was my favorite the moment he was introduced in Book 1. I'm so glad that he was brought back for his romance with Galen. Galen and Piper assist gnole Earstripe on his quest to uncover the source of mysterious deaths up river, but it turns out Piper has secrets of his own he's been hiding.

I loved this book, and how it delves deeper into the mysteries of the world as a whole. It also ends with the best final sentence I've ever read.

peanutnine The final sentence made me legit gasp out loud! 😱 13mo
sebrittainclark @peanutnine me too! I cannot wait until we get the next book! 13mo
peanutnine @sebrittainclark there's another one coming?! 13mo
sebrittainclark @peanutnine I don't think there's a title or date yet, but she tweeted in September that she finished writing book 4. https://x.com/UrsulaV/status/1702117926277447731?s=20 13mo

I finished this book within ten hours of realizing it existed. The last has me torn between flinging more money at Kingfisher for, you know, more books, and flipping this one back to start over again.

The romantic bit was nice and all but I would like more books right now, please and thank you, double quick.

esurient It is nearly midnight, I start my tomorrow in five hours, and I want to read this book again. And gnoles! I need more gnoles. And more cross-cultural politics. And you know those priests of the Hanged Mother are behind all of this, that's not even an anti-hint to the underplot. And Beartongue remains CRIMINALLY UNDERUSED. 3y
esurient AND THIS BOOK HAS NO AUTHOR'S NOTE. Do you know how much I enjoy those of 3y
esurient Kingfisher's? HM!? No note! So sad. Gosh I need sleep. 3y
