OPEN: An Uncensored Memoir of Love, Liberation and Non-Monogamy | Rachel Krantz
4 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
***** 'A starkly naked story of a young woman's adventure of self-discovery, told with a striking lack of shame or apology. Highly recommended.' - Dr. Christopher Ryan, author of Sex At Dawn 'Smart, original, ambitious, and deeply absorbing memoir... She succeeds by bringing us deftly and irresistibly into her most intimate pains and joys, stretching our understanding of what commitment and autonomy mean.' - Dr. Wednesday Martin, author of Untrue & Primates of Park Avenue 'A perfect guide to our new world, the only problem I had picking up this book was putting it back down. Open compels, entertains, and may ultimately transform its readers.' - Dr. Terry Real, internationally recognised Family Therapist, author, and founder of the Relational Life Institute When Rachel Krantz met and fell for Adam, he told her that he was looking for a committed partnership - just one that did not include exclusivity. Excited but a little trepidatious, Rachel set out to see whether love and a serious relationship can coexist beyond the familiar borders of monogamy. This is her open and honest true story. Now, in her debut memoir, she chronicles her dive into non-monogamy. With fly-on-the-wall detail and extraordinary perceptiveness, OPEN takes us inside Brooklyn parties and into the wider swinger and polyamory community. Armed with her journalistic instincts, detailed journal entries and interviews with experts and therapists, Krantz also breaks new ground in confronting the unique ways tacit abuse and gaslighting can manifest when things get so complex. Unflinching and brazen, OPEN asks what liberation really looks like, and whether the pleasure really is worth the pain.

Bailedbailed

Hmm, the audiobook narration is not particularly well done -- I'm confused about where the section breaks are. I'm also wary after reading a review on Goodreads where Jessica Woodbury writes about the feeling of reading a memoir where you see the situation more clearly than the memoirist because they're too close to it still. I've definitely felt that with other books and I don't want to have the same experience with this.

Megabooks I bailed as well. I agree she was still too close. 2y

Mehso-so

I can admire Rachel for wanting to remove the stigma on non- monogamous relationships and laying bare her experiences. Her memoir documents her journey in vivid details, whilst providing academic research to enhance the reader‘s knowledge and open their minds to another way of exploring relationships. However this memoir was not for me. I found it self-serving and more voyeuristic than educational. #NetGalley #ARC #NF22 #OutOfMyComfortZone

BarbaraBB I can understand that. Not for me either. 2y
Cinfhen It got pretty graphic @BarbaraBB and while I‘m no prude, I couldn‘t be sold on the idea that all of this is healthy for your intimacy and relationship. I‘m not judging her lifestyle but it‘s clearly not for me. 2y
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 I won‘t be bothering either. 2y

DivineDiana Thank you, Cindy. I am a bit prudish, so probably not for me. 🙂 2y
BarbaraBB I just don‘t believe that. That it‘s healthy for your relationship. I always think that‘s just a convenient thought. I wish it were true though 😂 2y
Cinfhen Hahahahaha @BarbaraBB xx 2y
Cinfhen If I thought it had some GENUINE benefits, I‘d recommend it @DivineDiana @TrishB but I don‘t think it has any true merit 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
Megabooks Not for me! I don‘t even have a relationship to keep open! 😂😂 2y
Cinfhen You could opt for the swinging single @Megabooks xxx😂😂 lots of threesomes! I just don‘t get it/ but whatever works/ I feel like I‘ve become my parents, with my “old fashioned” beliefs 😆 2y

#NetGalley #ARC #AssignmentRead I‘m not enjoying this book, at all. But need to read, finish & review before publication day, January 25,2022🎊

Feels more voyeuristic than educational.

TrishB Good luck 👍🏻 2y
Cathythoughts Love your book & mug & flowers pic 👍❤️ 2y

Pickpick

Raw, brazen, vulnerable. This is both memoir and research paper into the world of open relationships and other non-monogamous constructs. It‘s also a primer from the inside of a relationship built on gaslighting. Parts are uncomfortable as hell to read. It illuminates ⬇️

BarbaraTheBibliophage … a lifestyle, but is incredibly personal at the same time. Polyamory and non-monogamy are included in more fictional stories than ever. This is an unflinching true story. TW: addictive behaviors, sexually explicit, emotional abuse, self-harm. 2y
Cinfhen I have this ARC too!! I‘m SUPER behind on my NetGalley reviews 🤦🏼‍♀️ 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to hear what you think of this! Totally understand the NetGalley schedule issue … LOL. 2y
