Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo DAO Zu Shi (Novel) Vol. 1
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo DAO Zu Shi (Novel) Vol. 1 | Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
Also known as MDZS, the blockbuster danmei/Boys' Love novels from China that inspired comics, animation, and the live-action series The Untamed--which amassed billions of views, including on Netflix! This historical fantasy tale of two powerful men who find each other through life and death is now in English, for the very first time. Wei Wuxian was once one of the most outstanding men of his generation, a talented and clever young cultivator who harnessed martial arts, knowledge, and spirituality into powerful abilities. But when the horrors of war led him to seek a new power through demonic cultivation, the world's respect for his skills turned to fear, and his eventual death was celebrated throughout the land. Years later, he awakens in the body of an aggrieved young man who sacrifices his soul so that Wei Wuxian can exact revenge on his behalf. Though granted a second life, Wei Wuxian is not free from his first, nor the mysteries that appear before him now. Yet this time, he'll face it all with the righteous and esteemed Lan Wangji at his side, another powerful cultivator whose unwavering dedication and shared memories of their past will help shine a light on the dark truths that surround them. This Chinese xianxia fantasy novel series built around the romanticized love between two men (danmei) has been translated into numerous languages and spawned a multimedia franchise that has taken the globe by storm, including the massively popular live-action series The Untamed available now on Netflix, YouTube, and more. The Seven Seas English-language edition will include exclusive, all-new cover art from Jin Fang (jinzillaa), interior illustrations from Marina Privalova (BaoshanKaro), and a translation by Suika (yummysuika) with editor Pengie (pengiesama).

Ohhh that was very infodumpy.

It feels like MXTX got more complex and serious than with SVSSS, but didn't yet have the craft that made TGCF shine. I can see lots of stuff I like the idea of here, and there are some fun scenes, but holy mackerel, I cannot keep this backstory straight.

I basically treated it like a Norse saga though: let the names wash over you, you'll get it later. It has potential, though I don't *love* it.

shanaqui And that's my last read for October and closes out #HauntedShelf and my #BookSpinBingo all at once.

Also one of my #CastTheDie choices, and finishes a different October TBR bingo card as well. Finishing on a high note, bringing home plenty of points for #RestlessSpirits, I hope!

PuddleJumper 🎉🎉 I didn't get on with this one either. The translation isn't great, I think you can find one online that is better, but it was all over the place. I can see why people love it though especially with the TV series, the anime, the manga blah blah 1mo

Mehso-so

Out of all of MXTX‘s works this was the one that interested me the least. I wasn't going to buy it but I found it for £3 at a charity shop.

This didn't capture me. I enjoyed the sections in the present but I found the flashbacks quite dull. I'm not interested enough to carry on, especially since it's such a long series and expensive to buy.

⬇️

PuddleJumper It wasn't helped by the translation which was rough. It's very awkward and stilted, there's often juvenile language and it doesn't flow naturally. There are also several errors and inconsistencies which made it difficult to understand what was going on.

Book cover scavenger hunt: Moon

CSeydel Oh wait maybe I‘m misunderstanding the scavenger hunt - the word should be something on the cover? I just posted a book where AI features in the story but it‘s not shown on the cover 😅 2mo
PuddleJumper @CSeydel You want the prompt featured on the book cover. Using moon as an example, it could be the word moon in the title or author name, it could be a picture of a moon etc. There's also book cover hates in the list so things like fake sticker or real people so you'd find a book with a fake sticker on the cover 2mo

Another great series! This series is a “Light Novel” which means it‘s format is the same as a regular book with a few illustrations along the way. This was a great set up for the rest of the series. Love the characters.

xicanti Mo Xiang Tong Xiu‘s books are actually Chinese! 3y
KristiAhlers @xicanti I actually knew that. I realized my error as I was marking off what I‘d read in my bullet journal. 🙄. 3y

I finished the first volume of GRANDMASTER OF DEMONIC CULTIVATION‘s official English translation this morning, with minimal help from my sleepy dog. This version‘s a lot more polished than the unofficial fan translation I read a couple years back. I dunno if the contents got another round of edits or if these translators interpreted things differently, but I definitely appreciate the lessened homophobia. It seriously jarred me back then.

This was forced on me ahem, I mean recommended to me by a 2021 Year 12 student who generously gave every book I suggested over the past 4 years a go. So it‘s my turn. Originally posted to a Chinese online site, it has finally been translated and published as a physical text. I have waited ages for it to arrive (#bookdepo). I know very little about it. #goinginblind #currentlyreading #volumeone #translated. I actually have no idea what tags to add…

KristiAhlers I have this one on my stack of books to read! I‘m looking forward to it. Something different. A book seller recommended it to me 😂 4y
