Companion Piece | Ali Smith

From the Man Booker Prize shortlisted-author of the brilliant Seasonal Quartet series--a major new novel that promises to capture the present moment with Ali Smith's genius and bold spirit. Autumn. Winter. Spring. Summer. What comes next when the world continues to change? With an eye for rendering the timely in a timeless way and enchanting readers with lyrical prose and grace, Ali Smith's ambitious Seasonal Quartet--a series of four stand-alone novels, separate but interconnected--artfully guided us through #MeToo, Brexit, the refugee crisis, a global pandemic, and more. Now, Smith's highly anticipated Companion Piece looks to the future and builds upon this "time-sensitive project." This new novel stands apart from the Quartet, which remains discrete unto itself. But like her groundbreaking series, it promises to capture the spirit of the times and offer a hopeful glimpse of the future. As always, Ali Smith will delight and surprise us.

“No, I meant why are books important? she said. Apart from that they‘re a pleasure? I said. Because, uh, because they‘re one of the ways we can imagine ourselves otherwise.“

Edgar is a great reading companion.

#AdventRecommends December 8th

This is classic Ali Smith. I love her writing and the way she mixes art, especially female artists, into the story.
This is also set during the pandemic and raises some questions regarding how people handled that

sarahbarnes Love her too ♥️ 2y

Loved. Ali Smith has such a great style - fluid speech and wonderful turn of phrase. Pandemic novel, about a caring daughter who lives a more unusual life working and thinking about words. As well as a medieval young female blacksmith who is resilient and smart. Really enjoyed the human connections

jlhammar Looking forward to this one. 2y

It‘s so hard for me to review books that are very near & dear to my heart. This novel set during the early part of the Covid 19 pandemic is about our need for the companionship of others, our responsibilities to our fellow citizens, how our actions have unseen repercussions. I ached for the narrator, feeling lost while her father is in hospital, unable to visit him on account of Covid restrictions. Brilliant, wry & playful.

LeahBergen Lovely review! 2y

My first #BookSpin since last year! One of my 2022 reading goals was to have my TBR shelf empty by the end of December… Uh-oh, I think I‘m in trouble (this isn‘t even even half of it). These are #s 1-17. 18-20 will be library holds.

I loved this. This is amazing. Smith‘s play with words and language - I love it.

About a woman who out of the blue is contacted by a woman she knew back at university. Before she knows it, she‘s contacted by the woman‘s kids as well.

In the background is the pandemic which is supposed be over.

A book about the meaning of words, about respecting how other people may take precautions you don‘t see the need to and about taking strangers in.
