The Half-Life of Ruby Fielding
The Half-Life of Ruby Fielding | Lydia Kang
6 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
From the bestselling author of A Beautiful Poison comes a spellbinding historical mystery about hidden identities, wartime paranoia, and the tantalizing power of deceit. Brooklyn, 1942. War rages overseas as brother and sister Will and Maggie Scripps contribute to the war effort stateside. Ambitious Will secretly scouts for the Manhattan Project while grief-stricken Maggie works at the Navy Yard, writing letters to her dead mother between shifts. But the siblings' quiet lives change when they discover a beautiful woman hiding under their back stairs. This stranger harbors an obsession with poisons, an affection for fine things, and a singular talent for killing small creatures. As she draws Will and Maggie deeper into her mysterious past, they both begin to suspect she's quite dangerous--all while falling helplessly under her spell. With whispers of spies in dark corners and the world's first atomic bomb in the works, the visitor's sudden presence in Maggie's and Will's lives raises questions about who she is and what she wants. Is this mysterious woman someone they can trust--or a threat to everything they hold dear?

This was okay. It was overly complicated with too many coincidental connections and I found the main characters annoying at times and their behavior implausible. But there were lots of twists, some of which surprised me. And my cat who rarely sits on my lap spent the morning on my lap while I finished this 😻

Finished this one yesterday. I had it on my kindle as a free month read I think. #ALSpine

This one I was not expecting that ending! The twist 😱

A woman finds herself under the stairs in a Brooklyn house, beaten up and drugged. The brother and sister bring her in and help her. This is set during WWII in NYC. Lots of talk about people being spies and not knowing who to trust.

I really enjoy Lydia Kang‘s books although I still need to read Opium and Absinthe . This one is is set in NYC during WW2 when a mysterious young woman turns up passed out on half-siblings Will & Maggie‘s doorstop. What does Laurel/Ruby want with them? I was pleased with all of the twists in this book that kept me guessing & the focus on the Manhattan Project & Ruby‘s penchant for making poisons. A fun ride if you like unique historical fiction.

For the majority of this book I had no idea which characters were the bad guys & which the good. Which definitely kept it interesting! I didn‘t realize how the depths of patriotism & fear of spies was during this time in NYC. I‘m going to have to read more of Kang‘s books to learn more about the Cutter women too - interesting topics of poisons & antidotes.

It's WWII, and we meet Will who is working on the Manhattan Project and Maggie, his sister who finally got a job.

THE HALF-LIFE OF RUBY FIELDING has great characters, great writing, an interesting story line, and lot of secrets and surprises.
